Shopping rewards platform Rakuten is offering new members $40 bonus cash back (or 4,000 bonus American Express® Membership Rewards® points, if you choose). All you have to do is sign up for an account and spend $40 or more on eligible purchases within 90 days of being a Rakuten member. You might be able to get your bonus cash within a few weeks of successfully fulfilling the promotion. (If you’re tight on money this time of year, this could help you out.)
That’s on top of whatever cash you earn for those purchases initiated through the Rakuten website or app. (Here’s a tip: the cash back offerings sometimes differ between the website and the app.)
December 16 is the final day to enroll. The promotion was set to expire on December 8 but Santa Rakuten is giving us good boys and girls another few days to take advantage of it!
Ideas for Spending $40
It’s not hard to reach that $40 minimum spending requirement. There are literally thousands of Rakuten merchants. These are just a few ideas.
- Do you want to be original and not give someone an Amazon gift card? Consider that GiftCards.com awards cashback for select purchases.
- If you hold The Platinum Card® from American Express and haven’t used your Saks statement credit feature, start your shopping sesh through Rakuten.
- Are you The Business Platinum Card® from American Express member who hasn’t taken advantage of your Delta statement credit for this half of the year? Dell is a Rakuten merchant.
- There are a lot of merchants that offer cash back for in-store purchases. You simply link the credit card(s) you use for shopping in person and then manually add the offers to your account. For example, CVS is offering 7.5% cash back as of this posting. Add CVS in-store to your account if you need to pick up cold medicine, medicine supplies, prescriptions, liquor, etc. (Gift cards are explicitly excluded — but stranger things have happened….)
What If You’re Already a Rakuten Member?
Excellent! Send your referral link to friends, family members, coworkers, social media following, etc. You’ll earn $40 when/if they sign up through your link and successfully spend $40 within 90 days.
