The United States Department of State issued a travel advisory on Friday, advising U.S. citizens worldwide to “exercise increased caution.” But a particular group of people should apparently be extra vigilant. “The Department of State is aware of the increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against LGBTQI+ persons,” the advisory states. “Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists, including Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons.”

Here’s the advisory’s entire text:

Location: Worldwide

Event: Due to the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution.  The Department of State is aware of the increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against LGBTQI+ persons and events and advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution.  U.S. citizens should:

  • Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists, including Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas.
  • Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.

What, no TikTok for the State Department? 😉 And don’t they know that Twitter is now known as “X”?

Seriously, though, not everyone is thrilled by Americans visiting their countries. And more than a couple of dozen countries criminalize LGBT people. I’m curious what sort of intelligence the State Department received that Pride events and “venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons” might be especially vulnerable to terrorism now.

Stay safe during your travels abroad and domestically!

Honestly no matter where we go in life this world is filled with chaos and it seems to be only getting worse…i say your best bet is to stay home if u don’t got to really go anywhere and keep your children close and stay in contact at all times till the storm passes keep safe everyone

@Amanda Ray, this is just more general ‘we heard something from this guy’ noise from the State Department. They throw in the LGBTQI+ hook, as June is around the corner and celebrations in that walk of life will be very visible, worldwide. It’s certainly your choice to keep your children on a leash and stay in your basement with bicycle helmets on. This ‘storm’ is not passing, it’s more chaos and misinformation. I’ll choose to exercise my regular amount of caution and live life while I can.
