I can not begin to tell you how many jokes were shared about where the lines were in the sea to mark the equator (you know like on a globe, etc.). I mean, it is a rather big deal as how many people in their lifetimes have crossed this invisible line at sea? I had flown over it but that is really not at all the same as doing so on the ocean.
As you can see I have “officially” been certified by my NCL Captain Luigi to have completed this momentous event in my life and could proudly display this on my wall of accomplishments (well, no not really). So what was it like in person.
I went alone.
I mean without my wife as rather than join me on deck she stayed at a bar enjoying the World Cup matches and I have to tell you I think she made the right call. But as you can see a large portion of the ship’s inhabitants, like me, did turn our for the elaborate poolside ceremony.
Maybe elaborate is not quite the right word.
I mean the ship’s Captain was on hand to oversee the festivities. There were also a number of crew wrapped in togas (bed sheets) and had what looked like a tin foil trident that was, errr, impressive?
Maybe?
Oh and in the distance you can see the “talent” who normally were doing shows in the theater in the evening. Honestly this performance was better than the shows they performed at night – yikes!
Our heroic Captain Luigi seemed to very much enjoy taking photos of the event and our also toga clad enthusiastic cruise director was really into the celebration despite the wind making it hard for her to stay on course.
If you have not gathered yet this was a silly and funny event that was fun to very briefly take part in and I am more thrilled having actually crossed the equator as compared to the celebratory event.
So I have to ask you – have you ever sailed across the equator? Did your ship put on any kind of ceremony to mark the event? I really want to know. – René
