When I am booking a cruise I know that I will be enjoying an adult beverage onboard like a slushy frozen rum punch by the pool and perhaps a glass of wine with dinner. I also know that these beverage are very expensive unless I already have a drink package booked as part of my cruise and why I always try to look for promotions that include this (I still have to pay daily tips for the package but well worth the price).
Some cruise lines allow you to bring a limited amount of alcohol onboard with no fee. Others charge a small or large fee to bring your own drink onboard. But what is all but universally across all cruise lines never allowed is to bring any kind of drugs onboard that are considered illegal drugs (while most prescription drugs are not an issue things like medical marijuana are still a no-no).
My wife and I recently returned from our 14 day Carnival Glory Atlantic Ocean crossing cruise and had some quality time to kill waiting for our pickup (more on that later) but got to enjoy watching the dance that is both unloading a massive cruise ship and reloading the same ship.
The Glory was shifting to it’s new normal of 3 & 4 day cruises and that group of passengers was a very different group of folks than the ones who we sailed with from Barcelona Spain.
As shuttle bus after shuttle bus pulled up and disgorged group after group of excited passengers ready for a party cruise they left their bags to be loaded into rolling bins to be then taken onboard and up to their cabins.
What most of these folks did not see after they walked off to check in and wait to board was a very enthusiastic drug sniffing K-9 and his handler walking around all these bags and as the dog alerted over and over those bags were put on another cart and wheeled off by the police.
Yikes!
I freely admit I really enjoy watching these canines working at airports and so on and I fully understand just how good these dogs are at their jobs and how little it takes for them to alert that they have smelled something that they were trained to find.
There have been more and more social media coverage of the increased use of drug dogs by cruise lines and yet some still think they can get away with bringing something onboard. My warning to you is – just don’t – you are likely not only to get caught and maybe face jail time but also a possible ban for life from the cruise line and having breached the terms of your cruise contract likely not going to get a refund from your dream cruise vacation you booked! – René
