Many of people in Los Angeles have a dark obsession with car chases involving law enforcement officers pursuing bad guys through Southern California freeways, major roads, and backstreets.
Well, there was a rather interesting chase last week at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
A pelican (the bird, not the equipment case) apparently thought to itself, Hey, if these planes can take off and land from the runways, why can’t I?
And that’s what happened, as captured by L.A FLIGHTS. The pelican helped itself to a tour of the airport’s southside, flying and landing at will.
Airport operations vehicles drove near the pelican, trying to scare it away. But the pelican seemed to really love LAX. (Hey, someone has to!) One airport employee got out of his car and tried persuading the bird to carry on its way.
At one point, the bird tried hiding under an American Airlines Boeing 737-800. Multiple efforts to catch the bird were unsuccessful — and air traffic controllers were forced to briefly close Runway 25R.
LAX is already down to three of its four runways because of taxiway construction on the north side. Shutting down a second runway — even briefly — can back things up. (We’ve seen this before when Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris bases herself out of her L.A.-area home and uses LAX to commute to-from West Coast engagements, necessitating security ground stops.)
The pelican eventually flew behind a hangar. Its fate is currently unknown (though hopefully, it’s soaring someplace safer than, you know, an airport).
By the way, below is one of the most bonkers endings to a car chase we’ve ever seen in Southern California. (Hang on to your wigs.)
