For us Frequent Floaters we all know the drill, that is, we check-in online as soon as we can. We next arrive, at least, one day before our ship is set to sail. We get to the port early even if they have us “scheduled” for a later boarding. We are very careful when it comes to booking shore excursions that are not ship sponsored as if we are late in returning to the ship… well…
The ship is either gone or pulling away from the port – yikes. ThatGuy, author here on the blog had a great post about this very topic but just recently there has surfaced another hilarious (well for us not them) video of what was two MSC passengers missing their ship and yelling to the captain to please return and pick them up (see it here on ‘The Sun”).

Clearly the El’Capitano did not return to port (nor should he have). The effort to dock a ship, not only takes a ton of time, but the cost to do so at this point would have been ridiculous i.e. think of all the onboard staff as well as shore staff (who likely are now gone or gone home) to do all this and make it 100% safe to lower a gangway again. Beyond all that you know in this age you will end up on Youtube looking like an idiot and btw did you see his wife’s reaction? 😉
Also, as I posted in a video in the news roundup on Sunday, the idea of this couple trying to board via the pilot boat is not just ultra dangerous but talking them into this would be highly unlikely! No, these folks would have been better off to get a hold of the shore folks who may now have all their stuff from onboard.
There is a great compilation video of lots of other folks who have experienced similar late arrivals and some of them really are sad (but funny).
I have never been late to a ship other than once on a ship sponsored tour and let me tell you we were nervous even then but repeatedly were told the ship would wait for us no matter how long it took and they were right as there were other tours way later than ours and we departed almost 2 hours late that day!
I have to ask – have you ever had a ship depart without you? Have you ever pushed it so close that they pulled the gangway right after you boarded? I really want to know! – René
