The above featured image is what is left over after I devoured my first ever Fox Brothers Bar-B-Q Beef Short Rib meal on a recent Delta flight. But I am getting ahead of myself.

Delta Air Lines lets those in domestic first class pick meals at exactly the 7 day mark of your flights departure. I was able to log in to the fly Delta app and make my choice but shortly after I had done that I also go an e-mail from Delta reminding to make a selection. I had the following choices:

a screenshot of a menu

While my wife and I discussed all the choices, and a few of the other ones did look interesting, we both came back to the obvious choice, that is, the BBQ since neither of us had ever tried it.

A few hours later I received e-mail confirmation of my choice. I have to say, while I like that AA allows you to pick a meal 30 days out, both the alert as well as the confirmation e-mails from Delta are a very nice touch and appreciated.

Our flight was an old Delta B737-800 but it had the upgraded seat back entertainment including satellite TV that was also really nice as I was wanting to finish watching the final round of this years Master’s tournament. But there was an upgrade downside. The space under our seats was now so small (due to the IFE boxes) that our backpacks would not fit under and the overhead bins were originals and very small legacy ones. Ah well. On to dinner.

On this flight no preflight beverage was provided (the flight was 100% full so I sorta understand) so water till up in the air. Then, before dinner, snacks and drinks were provided. Then the star of the show arrived.

a tray with food on it

You could literally smell the smoke as it went past my nose on the way to my tray. I wanted to start with my salad course but had to dive in for a taste and I have to say this was maybe the second or third best bite I have ever had on a Delta jet – NUM! The Mediterranean salad was good but contains a ton of peppers and I am not a big fan of green and red peppers so not my favorite (I removed them and finished off the rest). The short rib was cooked perfectly and all the veggies were also scrumptious. I could have polished off a dozen of the pearl onions and the carrots were just barely cooked and had great crunch. The potatoes were also perfect and while I am not a fan or turnips they too were ok.

Again as you can see from the featured photo re-posted here I just about licked the bowl. All the flight attendants were Strive for Five worthy and attentive. Oh and the free wifi mostly worked for the whole flight.

The only downside of this flight was really the age of the Delta interiors. My wife’s tray table would not stay flat and she had to use here headphone case to keep it from making dining a mess.

Overall I would not just 100% recommend this Delta first class meal choice but will select it again if I can however I will end with a note of caution. I have been reading around the web that Delta, depending on the station, is tweaking this and some other well received meal choices are not as good (or maybe even called Fox Brothers) as the ones from Atlanta. But thankfully, as the joke goes, all flights connect in ATL so you should be just fine! – Rene

This is my favorite entree on Delta currently!!! I’m gluten intolerant and have been able to eat the short rib a number of times (no guarantees for others but just a data point) without any issues.

Just curious, is the first class service on a flight from ATL to MEX the same as a Delta domestic first class flight? Also, what is the yellow bar with the three blobs next to it that you did not touch?

@Dave – Yes ATL to MEX. The dessert was something lemon and not a big lemon fan. Plus kinda full after dinner and salad.

In the photo of the short rib when you first got it, there is a card with Mashama Bailey, Head chef at The Grey. I too got this meal on a Delta Flight, it was amazing, but I was curious why they had Mashama Bailey info with the meal, I had thought this was something she curated. Not sure of the connection.
