One really does not expect nasty storms off the US East coast in May, but that is what happened recently and the impact to one cruise ship was remarkable. The Carnival Sunshine was returning to the Port of Charleston when they encountered this:

Yikes!
I find it crazy that the deck chairs and more were not tied down and secured before entering the heart of this strong storm.
There were reports of stuff flying all over the place in passengers cabins and in bars bottles of booze crashing down and flooding the floors requiring guests to vacate the venues. Below decks, in the crew areas, it was much worse:

The ship was delayed in arriving by many hours and guests waiting to board the next sailing were offered onboard credits to make up for their late departure.
The real heroes were the crew onboard that had to, beyond their normal duties, also clean up the substantial damage to you see above including their own cabins.
Per Crew-Center.com a company spokesperson and brand Ambassador John Heald said:
“…the public that the ship was never in danger during the storm [and] emphasized that the captain made decisions prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew. In such weather conditions, where storms may span across large distances, avoiding them entirely becomes a challenging endeavor.”
Since the ship was able to turn around and sail the damage must not have been structural but I question if other cruise lines would have made the same choice to sail into this severe storm. – Rene
