Being a cruise travel blogger the very first thing I do when I enter my cruise ship cabin is get out my camera and take photos and video of the room. I want to show off the cabin perfectly cleaned and setup the way you will likely find it when you get onboard for the blog as well as my Youtube channel.
Once that is done I set myself at the task of customizing the cabin “my way”. What is my way you ask? I get out powerful magnetic hooks and place them in strategic locations as well as finding a spot for my pop-up laundry hamper (you really want one of these btw). I also go about moving or stacking things I know I will not need like the mini bar menu or the ice bucket and move them to another spot to open up the space for my use. Everything I do is quickly undone and has no impact on the next guest’s use of the room.
But there seems to be a new social media trend that I am disgusted with. Notice what Yahoo News has reported (with photos) recently:
“…two people were seen on a Royal Caribbean Cruise reading their books on a mattress they’d dragged onto the balcony.”
My gosh no no no people – just so no! Please don’t ever do this (even if your cabin is so full of smoke and chemicals that you can not breath in your room)! Here are the many reasons why.
- Balconies are not clean! Your attendant or attendants work really hard every day to make sure your cabin is spotless and clean. The exception is your balcony where they will wipe down a table and straighten things up but it is rare they will mop or clean the floor as that is done now and then by other staff. Point being things inside your room (like a mattress) should not be dragged to a dirty outside environment.
- Safety! A lot of planning and thought goes into what items are on your balcony and part of that is due to safety. Putting a mattress and or mattress with sheets on the balcony is risky and with wind could send sheets flying.
- Damage! In addition to the dirty environment on the balcony rain squalls are common at sea and your mattress is not designed to get wet. So not only could you damage the mattress but you may end up sleeping in a wet bed that could mold and leave the next guests with an unpleasant (to say the least) situation.
- Rules! Talking to “ThatGuy” our writer who works full time for a major cruise line he shared with me that most lines have rules against you doing dumb things like this and if you are caught it could cost you – like a lot. You may get a bill from the cruise line and worse they may choose to ask you to leave the ship at the next port and not come back!
Bottom line – just don’t do this. It is a really dumb idea and it shows great disrespect for the cruise line and passengers to follow you into the cabin. – René
