This past weekend I was in need of just having a clock ON. I turned to my phone since my case has a built-in kick-stand (great for watching movies on flights). But the problem is the clock display was not that big and would not stay awake. Plus, I was thinking it would drain the battery quickly.
So, I went to my Android’s app store and searched around a bit. BINGO! I found the perfect solution: the “Day and night clock” or “Night Clock” app. It was just what I needed for my task.
But after I was done I started playing with this free app and quickly decided to pay the $2.99 requested for full app access. I so wished I had this for years when I was flying almost every week. Here is why.
One of my biggest pet peeves when staying at a hotel is either A) there is no alarm clock or B) the clock does not work or is hard to program or C) I either forget to turn off the previous guest’s alarm at 3:AM or lastly D) it is set for the wrong time and I did not notice and then the alarm is set for the wrong time.
Now before anyone says something like “You don’t need a clock just call and set a wake-up call” know I do that every time and set it for 30 minutes after my alarm time – but those things don’t always work so it’s not a perfect solution.
But this Android app is everything I need. Not only does the clock stay on but I can tweak it just the way I like it. I can have the perfect brightness so when I wake up confused where in the world I am (and when) I can, at a glance, know. I can set an alarm either to my favorite wake-up song or even internet radio stations. I know the time will be always correct as my phone resets to wherever I am in the world and I can even see the alarm time is set correctly and the weather as well.
I am in love!
From now on if I find a clock, I’ll unplug it as soon as I come into the room and plug in my phone to charge. There will from this point forward always be a consistent clock in every room (or ship) I stay in. Just perfect.
This app is for Android and there does not seem to be an iOS version from this programmer but my guess is you iOS folks (paging my blog brother, Chris) already have an app that does all this and more and this is just one more eye roll worthy reason you can look down at us Android folks. If not – time to upgrade to Android!
So do you have an absolute favorite travel app you can not live without and has changed the way you travel like me? – René

I found a similar app for Jewish travelers – “Shabbos Clock”. It stays on all the time and it has safeguards that prevent violating the Sabbath for those of us that observe it. I agree that it’s annoying when you get to a hotel and find there is no alarm clock – or that one that is there requires a PhD to figure out how to make it show the right time and stop the alarm from going off at 3am!
That’s a great suggestion — thanks!
