These aren’t the best offers we’ve ever seen for Delta Amexes. But Delta’s making things interesting as of late. Their insane flash sales have included trips as low as 42,500 SkyMiles to Australia — and even lower to New Zealand and other destinations. So, this might be a good opportunity to stock up on SkyMiles if you’re interested.
What Are Some of the Featured Perks?
Each product grants the cardholder the following:
- Main Cabin 1 boarding
- 20% statement credit on eligible onboard purchases made during Delta and Delta Connection flights (we’re talking premium food and beverages)
- First checked bag free for the cardholder and up to eight others on the member’s confirmation number (that can really save you some big bucks)

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card grant cardholders complimentary access to Delta Sky Clubs when traveling on a same-day Delta-operated or Delta-marketed flight. Plus, card members may visit American Express Centurion Lounges in U.S. airports when traveling on a same-day Delta-operated or Delta-marketed flight — provided their trip was purchased with an eligible American Express card issued in the United States.
PLEASE NOTE THE BELOW CHANGES
-
- Delta SkyMiles® American Express Reserve Cardholders (personal or business)
- Starting February 1, 2025, Reserve Card Members will receive 10 complimentary visits per Medallion year to the Delta Sky Club; to earn an unlimited number of visits each year starting on February 1, 2025, the total eligible purchases on your card must equal $75,000 or more between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024, and each calendar year thereafter.
- American Express Platinum (personal or business)
- Effective January 1, 2025
- Six (6) Sky Club visits per Medallion year
- Spend $75,000 during a calendar year and receive unlimited club visits for the rest of that Medallion year and all of the following Medallion year
- Effective January 1, 2025
- No Sky Club access for anyone traveling on a Basic Economy ticket
- Effective January 1, 2024
- Delta SkyMiles® American Express Reserve Cardholders (personal or business)

The following cards come with Companion Certificates starting year two of card membership:
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card
The Reserve cards’ Companion Certificates are valid for select Delta One, First Class, Comfort+, and Main Cabin fares. The Platinum cards’ Certs are valid for select Main Cabin fares.
The Reserves and Platinums also give cardholders opportunities to earn bonus Medallion Qualification Miles (MQM) toward elite status.
Please note: these benefits will no longer be available as of January 1, 2024. There will be a new way to earn toward Medallion Status with the Card. Learn more at delta.com/
Very much worth noting: spending on the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card do not count toward the Delta Amex MQD Waiver unless you also hold at least one of the Delta Reserve or Delta Platinum cards.

TakeOff 15
Members who hold one of these six cards may take advantage of something called “TakeOff 15.” This entitles cardholders to automatic 15% SkyMiles discounts when booking award flights. That perk alone has saved my family a bunch of SkyMiles — which we’ve used for more redemptions.
Are These Great Offers?
The value of credit card welcome offers is usually subjective.
The consumer/personal Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card promotion doesn’t overwhelm me, to be honest. The card_name promotion is relatively decent, though. Remember, you may qualify as a small business if you freelance, sell anything online, drive rideshares, babysit, etc.
These offers seem targeted at people who want to travel but don’t care about elite status. After all, there aren’t any MQM included in the promotions.
But they also may appeal to those just wanting to pad their SkyMiles balances.
Each card is considered a separate product. You can hold a Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card at the same time.
If you fly Delta only once or twice a year — especially for leisure — you might want to consider the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card. It’s worth its weight in the first checked bag perk alone.

SkyMiles Flash Sales
Delta regularly announces flash sales for trips to various destinations. That’s nothing new.
But what is a new development — and a significant one, at that — are the 44,000 SkyMiles (in Main Cabin) sales we’ve seen to international destinations such as Auckland and Santiago.
Add TakeOff 15 to those and you’re really cooking with gas.
Will similar sales pop up in the future? We think so.
Which Card(s) Do I Hold?
I’ve held each of the cards featuring the increased welcome offers.
Just before the COVID-19 pandemic really kicked us in the teeth around April or May 2020, I held the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card, Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card, and Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card. Why all four? Primarily for their respective Companion Certificates.
We majorly dialed back our spending during the pandemic and I downgraded all but one of them to the no-annual-fee card_name (card_name). I kept my Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card and Mrs. Carley kept her Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card. (She downgraded her Platinum to a Blue card).
We were swimming in Companion Certificates — thanks to Delta kindly extending their expiration dates because of the pandemic. We’re considering upgrading to Platinums and Reserves again — just for the Companion Certificates.

Chris, Is it still the case that once you’ve had a given card, say the regular non-business Delta AmEx Reserve, you downgrade it and then upgrade it at a later time you do not get the Welcome bonus miles, correct?
Correct. But, you could call up Amex and tell the rep you’re thinking about upgrading back to the Reserve from the Blue or Plat or Gold or whatever you downgraded to. Then see if they have any offers that’d make it worth your while. They may give you a spending challenge.
Any data points on what AmEx is considering “lifetime” currently? I signed up for a personal gold card back in the early 2000s, upgraded to Platinum (with a bonus for upgrading at the time) and then cancelled when I got a Reserve when it launched, wondering if I might be able to secure another sign-up bonus given the passage of time.
This is somewhat OT, but this morning I got an email stating “You’ve Earned 15,000 MQMs With Your Card,” which I was expecting. However, I can’t figure out how to accept the MQMs. The email has a button for “VIEW MQMS,” but that just takes me to the main Delta page. Drilling down into my SkyMiles account, I see no way to accept or gift the MQMs.
I suspect that this is another Delta IT glitch. My status tracker still shows my AMEX spend at about $15K. Has anyone else had problems accepting MQMs?
Does this help?
If your tracker says only $15k, then the email was probably send in error, as you need $30k.
Thanks Chris! The link you provided in that post worked and I was able to add the 15K MQMs to my account. It’s odd that the link in the email did not work.
The SkyMiles status is still not showing the waiver, but you pointed out that it took 8 days for you. so I’ll just wait. I’m not flying on Delta until September.
Here’s hoping the MQD Waiver tracker updates before then…
