New York, USA - April 30, 2012: Boeing 737 Delta Air Lines approaches John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, NY on April 30, 2012. Delta is the oldest airline still operating in the United States.

“Quit complaining. Think of the points.” That’s just one of the hilarious comments made in a Reddit thread started by someone who says Delta Air Lines attempted a $115 trillion charge on their American Express card.

“Delta just tried to charge me $115 million to change my flight,” Redditor “FormalCricket” wrote on Monday. They posted an image purporting to show a text message from American Express, which flagged the transaction for $114,989,999,999,999.98.

First came some roasting.

“Hope you’re not an accountant because that’s $115 Trillion,” wrote Funny-Berry-807.

“looks like my illiteracy + innumeracy are the reasons why I don’t have $115 trillion lying around,” FormalCricket gracefully responded down the thread. (Redditor etzel1200 asked, “Given your method of accounting, can I borrow $10?”)

Hundred dollar bills money pile.

Then it was time for a barrage of witty Delta and Amex geek responses.

Some of my favorites:

  • “Relax. Plan It by American Express is here to help.” — williamcaseatl
  • “Make sure to use your Delta Amex. 3x the points on delta purchases!” — RedTruck1988
  • “Basic Ecconomy {sic} I assume. And of course, nonrefundable.” — emorycraig
  • “Man, those Comfort+ upgrades are getting pricier and pricier…” — Wild-subnet
  • “These mileage runs for diamond status are getting out of hand…” — TacticoolRaygun

It turns out, though, this isn’t exactly the first time something similar happened.

Redditor Bankerella received an Amex SafeKey alert last month saying Delta apparently tried charting CA$243,150,000,000,000 to their card. A35Flier helpfully noted, “$243 Trillion CAD could buy approximately 518,036 Airbus A350s at list price (yes, I did the math).”

In this situation, ExtensionSwitch437 noted, “Looks like a scam to me. Since there’s at least 1 obvious typo: ‘Here what you should know’ instead of ‘Here’s what you should know:’ But maybe Amex is getting sloppy due to Covid-brain.”

In the first instance, Xerisca wrote, “There have been a ton of posts about Delta’s software doing this to a lot of people today. This screams system upgrade or production configuration change that went horribly wrong. Haha.”

Final Approach

A couple of Reddit members posted messages that Delta tried charging trillions of dollars to their respective Amex cards. As usual, Redditors were quick to add funny quips. Perhaps these were scams, software updates, glitches, or identity thefts that caused the eye-popping attempted charges.

Regardless, it made for a few good laughs.

I would of had a heart attack the minute the plane started going down… I am scared to death of flying over the ocean… If I would of made it I know the sharks would of been there waiting to get me…
    That’s my bad luck…. Scared a cat…‍⬛

    It’s funny, but it’s not a scam. It’s a computer glitch.
