Some interesting news popped up for points and miles enthusiasts. Both pieces pertain to credit card welcome bonuses — one of the easiest and quickest ways to earn a bunch of points*.
Let’s check ‘em out!
80,000 Bonus Points: Gone Next Week
I know this is hard for some Delta and Amex lovers to stomach.

Here’s the thing: Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are a great travel currency. If you stay in hotels, rent cars, book cruises, or just enjoy cash back, you must look into Chase cards. Seriously. I was an Amex fanboy for a long time. Then I diversified my travel card portfolio and I haven’t looked back.
The card_name‘s current welcome offer expires before 9:00 AM Eastern Time on Thursday, May 25. New cardholders can earn 80,000 bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards® points after spending $4,000 within the first three (3) months of being approved for card membership. This link tells you more about the card and how to apply for the promotion.
The card’s annual fee is annual_fees. No one loves an annual fee. But we don’t get cards whose annual fees we can’t recoup. Here’s how to easily get back that annual fee.
Out of Nowhere: the American Express® Green Card
I wasn’t expecting this news. I was eating lunch yesterday and saw an email flash about an Amex Green Card promotion.
That Amex Green Card? I thought.
New card members may earn 60,000 bonus Membership Rewards® Points after spending $3,000 on eligible purchases within six (6) months of being approved for card membership. Plus, earn 20% back on eligible travel and transit purchases made during your first six (6) months of card membership — up to $200 back in the form of a statement credit.
The card_name earns 3X points on “Travel and Taste” (such an Amex phrase, right?) purchases:
- Travel
- Including flights, hotels, vacation rentals, and more.
- Transit
- Including trains, buses, ferries, subways, and more.
- Dining at restaurants
- Worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the US.
The card carries a annual_fees annual fee. (card_name). The welcome bonus easily covers that for several years. Plus, the card has an annual $189 statement credit toward CLEAR Plus membership. Is CLEAR worth it? Like most things, that’s subjective. CLEAR saved me from missing at least one flight (looking at you, Baltimore TSA).
The card_name is an interesting card. I love its 3X on travel and transit. Dining-wise you can do better with the card_name. But that has a $250 annual fee (card_name). Unless you use the card_name‘s benefits, the card_name could very well be worth a look.
Why the * Above?
It’s very easy to get caught up in the excitement of “spend X dollars and get Y points/miles!”
Here’s the thing: if you can’t afford the minimum spending requirements for a credit card’s welcome bonus, then it’s probably not for you.
My wife and I usually apply for several credit cards each year. But that’s only after we know how we can afford each card’s welcome bonus requirements.
