Why do so Many Cruise Line Passengers Decorate Their Cabin Doors With Magnets (and more)?!

The first time you ever take a cruise you may see something you did not expect. As you pass row after row of nearly identical doors on the way to your cabin you will, as embarkation day drags on, start to see these doors begin to change.

a door with a bunch of magnets on it

Some of them may be wild and covered with all kinds of magnets, taped on streamers and more and some even encourage you to move things around (like magnetic letters to allow you to send a message to those in the cabin).

a door with a keyhole and a toy fish on it

Others, much like my FrequentFloaters merc magnet on my door, are much more simple but enough to stand out.

a door with a sticker on it

Some are clearly put up to make a statement. While I did not confirm with the guests inside – I am rather confident that these folks paid for the unlimited drink package on their cruise! Agree?

a group of objects on a table

Then we have the odd collection doors. I sorta understand the larger ones but what gives with the simple white and pink dot magnets? I almost wanted to knock and ask but restrained myself.

a door with a sign on it

There is no doubt what this one is all about but if it were my door it would drive me nuts as I think I would spend the week knocking it off every time in and out of my cabin.

a door with magnets and a note on it

Then there are those that go really over the top and what a magnetic dry erase board and even a pen on the door. While I assume the point is to leave notes for those in the cabin – my guess is other guests took the time to share some warm funny greetings as well!

a door with a sign on it

With so much metal in the construction of a ship you really can stick things all over the place, that is, not just on the door where they may or may not fall off or be in the way. I give credit to these guests for where they chose to leave their magnetic board.

a door with a keyhole and a sign on it

Bottom line is you can expect to see all kinds of decorations on your fellow guests’ doors. Cruise Door Decorations is even a search category on Amazon! Some, I think, do it so that if they indulged a wee bit too much they are still able to quickly identify what cabin door is theirs. Others, like me, want something simple to know I am trying to open the right door. White boards, while nice, I think we will see less of as cruise line APPs become better for free communication when onboard.

What do you think? Did you know folks do all this and pack, not just clothing for their cruise, but stuff to geek-out their cabin doors? – René

This is … not normal behavior. Might be a bit snarky, but the women (and it’s almost always women) who do this “decorate my cabin door” thing are likely the same women who hang a seasonal flag at their home and clap when the airplane lands. They are a sorority unto their own.

@BookGirl305 – Well I found a FrequentFloaters tag on my door very helpful to quickly find our cabin but that is just me. 🙂

So the drunks can find their cabin in a sea of conformity.

This old man of the sea has seen lots of decorated doors over 40 years of cruising, especially over holidays. Door decorating is an old tradition that is not confined to sorority sisters or drunks.
