What is the very first thing you think of when you thing of a cruise? It’s food right? And amazing food choices that make your mouth just water thinking about them.
I mean a perfect medium steak paired with an amazing glass of red wine? Yes please and give me another one tomorrow!
But things did not go so well for those recently booked on TUI Groups Marella Discovery 2 as they had to, get this, cancel a sailing due to running out of food! And not just a few days but an entire sailing.
Cruisehive.com reported that a letter sent to guests said the following:
“Due to an unforeseen technical issue that will impact our ability to deliver our full food and beverage offering, we’re very sorry to tell you that we’ve taken the difficult decision to cancel our next sailing, our Pride of Panama itinerary. It’s not a conclusion we’ve come to lightly, but we’re not able to offer a suitable alternative cruise.” – Cruisehive.com
You may ask how can something like this happen? I mean, as you can see from the shot at the top of this post, food is one of the main reasons to get on a ship after all. Well it could have been a number of things that went wrong.
The Cruisehive author speculated it could have been a power failure that resulted in spoiled food. That only works if the end point for the current cruise did not allow for fresh supplies. For my recent crossing we loaded up for the 14 days in Lisbon and did not re-provision until Rio.
The other reason could have been a supplier issue at the end point of the current cruise. On one of my transatlantic crossings from Barcelona a few years ago we were short an entire pallet of something and the supplier had to fly the missing goods to our next port at their cost! Thus we did, just a day late, get everything we needed for the long crossing.
I find this a shocking, and very costly, reason to cancel an entire cruise. How could something so critical to a cruise be allowed to occur?

A rather cryptic comment from Marella sited to cruisemapper:
A Marella’s spokesperson said they understood how disappointing that would be and would like to apologize to their customers who had been impacted and thank them for their patience and understanding.
“While the ship is currently able to deliver our full food and beverage offering to customers currently onboard, maintenance is required to take place that would impact the cruise due to depart Jamaica on Tuesday, January 31.”
