Capital One upped its stake in the travel rewards world today with a pair of announcements.
A Capital One spokesperson told us that Capital One Savor, Quicksilver, Spark Cash, and Student cardholders may now earn unlimited 5% cashback on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.
On top of that, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card features a new early spend bonus: cardholders earn 75,000 bonus miles after they spend $4,000 within three (3) months of being approved for membership.
Here’s a quick look at both bits of news.
5% Cashback on Capital One Travel Bookings
Prior to today, only three cards earned 5X rewards when booking hotels or rental cars through Capital One Travel:
- Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (10X on rental cars and hotels through Cap One Travel)
- Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
- Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card
But now Capital One spread the love to rewards cards such as:
- Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card
- Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card
- Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card
- Capital One Spark Cash Select – $500 bonus
- Capital One Spark Cash Plus
- Capital One Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards Credit Card
- Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card
Those cards earn 5% cashback or 5X miles/points on rental car and hotel bookings made through Capital One.
Keep in mind that Capital One Travel is an online travel agency (OTA). Hotels and rental cars usually don’t honor elite status member benefits (upgrades, points earnings, etc.) for reservations booked through OTA. But if that doesn’t bother you, earning 5X is pretty darn good.
I find it slightly curious that just a single Capital One rewards card earns 5X on airfare booked through Cap One’s travel service. That’s the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.
Why’s that interesting? you may ask.
Consider that all four of the personal/consumer Chase Ultimate Rewards® cards offer 5X points on travel — including airfare — booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards® portal. Even the no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Chase Freedom Unlimited® award 5X on those travel purchases.
So, I wonder if Capital One will eventually make that move and get a little more competitive.
Special Offer for the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card features a new early spend bonus: earn 75,000 bonus miles after they spend $4,000 within three (3) months of being approved for membership. The card carries a $95 annual fee and earns 2X on all purchases — except the 5X on rental cars and hotels book through Capital One Travel.
It’s basically the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card without the travel perks and statement credits. (But as we’ve written, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card basically pays for itself — and then some.)
Capital One increased certain travel earnings to 5X/5%: rental car and hotel bookings made through Capital One Travel. That’s good news for Cap One cardholders who make those reservations on OTA.
And the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card also carries a new welcome bonus.
I remember a few years ago when, to be blunt, Capital One cards were an afterthought for those of us interested in travel awards. I like that Cap One is getting much more aggressive and improving their products. Heck, even I beg
