This is great news for Amazon shoppers.
Well, some of them. The ones who hold Chase Freedom Flex℠ cards will be happy. (If you don’t yet hold the no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex℠ card, read why we think it deserves a place in your wallet.)
Chase announced this week that Amazon purchases and select streaming service subscriptions charged to the card are the 2nd quarter 5% cashback bonus categories for Chase Freedom Flex℠ and the legacy Chase Freedom card (no longer open for new applications).
You must manually enroll in the promotion. Visit ChaseBonus.com and enter the primary cardmember’s last name, the last four digits of the card’s account number, and the billing ZIP Code.
The 5% bonus is applicable to the first $1500 in combined spending across those categories between April 1 and June 30. In other words, the most you can earn through a quarter’s promotion is $75 back. (Hey, that’s better than a kick to the head — especially for a no-annual-fee card!)
The bonus is technically awarded as 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards®. You decide how to redeem the points: cashback, statement credit, gift cards, apply toward travel purchased through Chase’s travel service, transfer to Chase travel partner, etc.
The points are potentially worth more than 5X — if you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve®, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. CSR cardholders can redeem points at a 50% bonus when purchasing travel through Chase, essentially making the 5X worth 7.5 cents. CSP and CIP members, meanwhile, can redeem them for travel at a 25% bonus.
Eligible Amazon Purchases
Chase does a good job of spelling out what qualifies as an eligible purchase and what doesn’t.
Qualifying purchases include “Purchases made at Amazon.com including digital downloads, Amazon.com Gift Cards, Amazon.com Fresh orders, Amazon.com Prime subscriptions, and items sold by third party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace.”
I appreciate that Amazon gift cards are included. I might start some Christmas shopping once the promotion goes live.
Excluded are “Purchases from merchants using Amazon Pay and [purchases] made at international Amazon retail sites (including but not limited to Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, or Amazon.co.jp), or any other website operated by Amazon.”
Select Streaming Services
Subscription fees for the below streaming providers qualify for the 5% cashback promotion.
- Apple Music
- Fubo TV
- HBO Max
- YouTube TV
Chase specifically notes that “music or video downloads, equipment, gift cards, etc.” won’t qualify.
Barring some major promotions that pop up, my streaming subscriptions are all charged to our Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express. That earns 6% cashback on purchases made with select U.S. streaming providers — and boasts a long list of eligible merchants. (Cashback is awarded as Reward Dollars which may be applied toward statement credit. Terms apply.)
Amazon purchases and select streaming service subscriptions second quarter’s 5% cashback bonus for Chase Freedom Flex℠ (learn more) and the legacy Chase Freedom card. Make sure to sign up now — and start saving money on April 1!
