On the heels of posting our JFK to San Francisco mileage run, I’m pleased to tell West Coast travelers that we found the same deal — but going the opposite direction 🙂
Like the JFK-SFO roundtrip, this one earns 5,172 MQM and $149 MQD for a current price of $189.20. That equals about 3.7 CPMQM. It’s also a Main Cabin trip — but aboard Delta’s 767s. So Medallions have a chance at Delta One upgrades.
Also worth mentioning, the return flight (scheduled for almost seven hours) is slated for service on board a 767-400. Those are outfitted with Premium Select seats — which are considered Comfort+ domestically. So Diamonds and Platinums can upgrade to those seats ASAP after booking.

This mileage run has more available dates through mid-March than its JFK-SFO counterpart.
Here’s what I found for a single-day turn on Saturday, February 5:
Unless you take the Long Island Railroad to Penn Station (that’s the best option, New Yorkers, correct?), riding the train to Manhattan for a slice at Joe’s or do some sightseeing probably isn’t in the cards for this layover.
There’s a great new Centurion Lounge at JFK (which we’ll review soon) and a good Delta Sky Club. You can get into both with:
- The Platinum Card® from American Express
- The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
- card_name
Remember that Centurion Lounges allow cardholders to enter only three hours prior to departure. But I’ve heard that if you have a long connection, they’re a little more lenient. Can anyone share data points on this — especially during mileage run turns? Thanks!
If you have just the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card, you can enjoy the Delta Sky Clubs for $39 per visit.

@ Chris — Even better is that there are good odds these are available for 5,500 miles each way in Main Cabin.
Seeing 16,000 SkyMiles + $6. So a slightly better deal, yes. Good idea.
A word of caution. keep your eye on JFK weather. If it looks like bad weather before your return flight… cancel. I just had my SFO to JFK leg of my trip cancel due to east coast weather on Thursday/ friday. (I booked it so that I could upgrade to Delta one on the red-eye portion of the trip) I would hate for someone to get stuck in SFO on a mileage run.
@Jeff – A true friend and I tried a SFO run and had 2x mechanicals. We got full points and dinner at One Flew South and a hotel free from Delta and still got full points! 😉
WOW!!
