Several readers contacted us during the past few weeks and asked if it’s worth pursuing Delta Medallion status through the rest of 2021.
After all, all MQM and Medallion statuses roll over to 2022.
So why make an effort?
It’s all subjective, of course. But here are a couple of reasons why you may wish to actually earn status this year.
1. Upgrade Priority
Do you prize upgrades? Then you might want to get busy earning Delta status.
Delta is rewarding Medallions who (re)qualify for status the traditional way (accruing MQM or MQS — and meeting MQD spend thresholds or a Delta Amex waiver).
Medallions who earn their status for 2022 will enjoy upgrade priority over those whose statuses simply rolled over.
All Medallion Members who earn their Status for the 2022 Medallion year by meeting the published qualifications will have Complimentary Upgrade clearance priority over those with extended Status within the same Tier. For example, a Platinum Medallion Member who earned Status on their own will clear before a Platinum Medallion Member who was given extended Status.
Let’s say you’re a Diamond Medallion right now. Your Diamond status and all your MQM will roll over to next year. But if you didn’t earn your status this year, Diamonds who did will clear upgrades before you.
Is this a big deal? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on how many “earned” status holders are on yours flights next year. But if complimentary upgrades are important to you, then consider earning your status.
2. Receive Choice Benefits (Platinum and Diamonds Only)
It appears Delta won’t give free Choice Benefits to Diamond and Platinum Medallions who don’t (re)qualify and just stick with their “rolled over” status next year.
If you love your Choice Benefits upgrade certificates (or other options), you might want to get crackin’.
Something Else to Consider: Pad Your MQM Balance
Yes, Delta said all MQM would roll over to next year. So if you hit Diamond this year with, like, 127,000 MQM you won’t start the year with just 2,000 as you would during “normal” years. Pretty awesome, right?
You’re basically getting a jump start on earning 2023 Medallion status (or 2024, depending on your strategy next year).
So why not load up on MQM (especially given the fantastic Status Accelerator effective through December 31, 2021)?
Fast Track to Status and/or MQM Padding
Are you suddenly panicking and want to earn your status and/or stash some more MQM?
Don’t flip out.
There are a few things you can do.
First, you can earn a ton of MQM and MQD through Delta trips through the end of 2021. Even when you book trips with award tickets. This is one reason we love the Status Booster. It might involve a lot of domestic US flying — but that’s not necessarily a horrible thing.
I asked Juicy Miles’ resident SkyTeam expert, Miles Jackson, about the feasibility of domestic US mileage runs to help with Delta elite status during the rest of the year.
“Domestic mileage runs are particularly great today for those people needing MQM,” he told me. “That’s because of Delta’s 2022 Medallion Status Accelerator program. Leveraging that with Juicy Miles’ creative routings, we can leverage MQM with 2.625 MQM per mile flown. The full value is realized when we design a complex mileage run itinerary that dramatically increases the standard mileage for a domestic trip.”
He also added, “We can create crazy routes that are ‘legal’ with the airlines, but won’t ever be displayed on an online travel agency’s booking engine.”
Remember, too, that three Delta American Express Cards offer bonus MQM as part of their welcome offers right now.
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
- Earn 20,000 bonus MQM and 85,000 bonus SkyMiles after spending $5,000 on purchases within three months of being approved for the card. (Offer expires November 11, 2021. Terms apply.)
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
- Earn 20,000 bonus MQM and 80,000 bonus SkyMiles after spending $5,000 on purchases within three months of being approved for the card. (Offer expires November 11, 2021. Terms apply.)

- Earn 10,000 bonus MQM and 90,000 bonus SkyMiles after spending a total of $3,000 on eligible purchases within three months of being approved. (Offer expires November 11, 2021. Terms apply.)
If you haven’t held one of those cards yet, applying for one now could be a good idea.
Depending on your love of upgrades, Choice Benefits, and MQM, it might be worth your while to earn your status this year — and enjoy some extra perks and a jump start earning status in future years.
