Anyone reading this blog loves to travel (maybe even more than me). They love this simply amazing big blue marble called “Earth” and the stunning features that were gifted to us to enjoy. From warm to cold to highest to depths our earth is unique in the universe.
I miss seeing it.
I want to see it again.
I am willing to do what it takes.
I am vaccinated. I will take boosters forever if needed.
I am willing to mask up and more if that is what it takes to once again fly.
I shared a post in May, once I was fully vaccinated and ready to travel the first thing I did was add travel insurance that covers me for everything I have booked or will book for a year. I already had two claims — and have no doubt that by the end of this year I will have the full fee covered (these are crazy times).
But now I have purchased something I would never ever have considered before due to COVID.
Yep. I bought a MedJet membership.
I am not willing to risk, if I end in the hospital somewhere on the planet, the cost to get me home via private air ambulance.
After the 15% cash back from TopCashback I am in, for both my wife and I, for about $1 a day to have the peace of mind when I travel that if the worst happens, even on a cruise, I can get home without breaking the bank.
Now to be fair, the Allianz insurance I already hold will, if needed, get me to the nearest hospital to care for me and includes $50,000 in medical coverage. But if things get ugly and I am in a part of the world with so-so quality services – I want to get home to the US.
The really sad part of all of this? COVID-19 could be a thing of the past (at least hear in the US). The “my body, my choice” anti-vax idiots cost me cash. They may, if another even more nasty variant than the DELTA variant emerges and spreads, cost us all the privilege of travel for many more years.
Let’s hope I never need the peace of mind MedJets membership provides me but I have it now if I need it for the next 12 months of travel! – René

The problem with Allianz is that their medical coverage is secondary, which in practical terms means that you’re in a foreign hospital somewhere while your regular health insurer and Allianz each play hot potato to avoid footing the bill. Foreign hospitals can get pretty cranky about not getting paid and may even demand payment before releasing you. That means that you end up footing the bill and hope to get reimbursed later.
If you have an Amex Plat, don’t they have $500k in evac insurance included (no need to even book trip with card).
@Paul – You are expecting WAY too much i.e. “Hospitalization: Coordination of arrangements for a Beneficiary’s hospitalization in the most adequate health facility or in a hospital closer to the Beneficiary’s residence, as deemed necessary by AXA Assistance Medical Department.”
Don’t expect what MedJets offers.
