We have an update on the 2021 Chicago Seminars.
UPDATED, August 17: The event will take place online.
Chicago Seminars coordinator Stefan Krasowski (of Rapid Travel Chai) posted on the event’s official FlyerTalk page:
Update: August 1, 2021: The Delta variant is causing an increase in cases nationwide amongst both those who are vaccinated and unvaccinated albeit with different levels of severity. Cook County capacity controls and other measures could be introduced. It is still our intention to hold an in-person event, but a final decision will not be made until September 1. Plans for an online event are in place, if necessary. Please stay tuned here for further details. In the meanwhile, stay safe and vaccinate as recommended by your doctor.
Cook County is home to Elk Grove Village, Illinois, where the event is scheduled to be held October 15-17. (I’m happy there’s an online contingency in place if the in-person event isn’t possible (again) this year!)
What’s the prognosis for Chicagoland? According to WBEZ:
Cases in Chicago and Illinois are increasing, though the daily averages are far lower than previous points in the last year. Hospitalizations and deaths have seen a slight uptick, but still remain low. And after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week dubbed more than half of Illinois’ counties as areas of “substantial” COVID-19 transmission, some public officials in the state began recommending everyone go back to wearing masks indoors.
Less than two months after Illinois fully reopened, all signs are pointing to another surge, health and public officials say, but some say this one may not be as alarming. And that’s because of how many people have been vaccinated already.
Keep in mind that Stefan said proof of COVID vaccination will be required for attendees if there’s an in-person event.
So there you have it. If you want to book flights for Chicago Seminars weekend, go for it — but make sure you can change your ticket without incurring any penalties.
