I know most of us Delta frequent flyers have not spent much time up in the air this year. Personally I have taken only a few flights since becoming fully vaccinated against COVID19 and only have a few more scheduled for the remainder of 2021 (but have a bunch booked for 2022). With this in mind, you may or may not be aware of what Delta has been rolling out on the tech side of flying. Let’s take a look:
I have been, for the most part, a fan of the Fly Delta App over the years. That is NOT to say everything has rolled out smoothly and for a while I was very much resisting (even downgrading) my Fly Delta App to the last version 4 iteration. Now Delta is telling us that we can use the app to make SDC or Same Day Change(s) as well as Standby for other flights.
Hummm…
(Hi, Chris here, butting in to Rene’s post. Simplest solution to this problem? Just get an iPhone. The latest iOS is available for phones as far back as iPhone 6s and SE, so…)
The idea to have lots of choices and power in my hands is nice but Delta IT also has a long (very long) track record of things going very badly and the result is a need to call Delta to try to fix it. Right now, with sometimes endless hours of hold time to talk to a rep, I do not want to find myself in that position. What else is new?
We are going to be able to “quick connect” to Delta WiFi and they say it should run smoothly. We shall see. But did you notice what else?
Soon you will be REQUIRED to have Android 11 to run the app.
Oh boy.
So Delta is telling me I have to upgrade my phone.
Sigh…
I have loved my LG V20 Android phone for may years. It works as good for me as the first day I got it. I have loved having a phone that has a replaceable battery (sadly no phone manufacturers offer this feature anymore). My V20 runs Android 8 and will never be updated again so Delta is telling me it is time to upgrade if I want to keep using their app.
To be fair, as a long time Sprint customer, I have already been Bonvoyed by T-Moblie and they too are telling me that I have to upgrade soon as I can not even put a new SIM chip in my old V20 phone. Thankfully they are giving me free a new Samsung Galaxy A32 5G free that does run Android 11 and has decent reviews for the price point.
What do you think about the current state of the Fly Delta App. Are you impressed with the new features? Are you going to have to upgrade your phone for 2022 as well? – René

Time for me to upgrade.
Most Android users will stop using the App instead of getting a new phone. I would bet whoever in Delta IT that is requiring in future app release to use Android 11 doesn’t have an android phone and doesn’t understand that most Android phones will only ever get at the most 2 software updates. Android updates are provided by phone manufacturer so if you have a phone that is 1 or 2 years old it might never get Android 11 or higher. This is sad news for the Delta app as both of my phones are less than 2 years old and will probably never get Android 11. 🙁
It’s 2 years I believe, not 2 upgrades.
SDC works well, it’s not just a screen scrape of the web site.
Does this affect iPhones? I don’t think so.
A couple of so years ago, I remember a post here saying not to upgrade the Delta app. If I remember correctly the reason was with that update, it could upgrade seats without you knowing, but you could a economy comfort seat, but in the middle. I haven’t updated the app (ios) since. Is it now clear to update?
I have the iOS app and it works fine.
I don’t think the issue mentioned was specific to an OS and it’s not an issue anymore.
@Keyser – I think they have fixed that specific bug now yes.
