I love being me. No seriously – it is so great being me. I am married to my best friend for over 30 years and she loves to travel almost as much as I do and she is an AVgeek as well. Oh, and one more thing, she is really good at sewing. Take a look at this:
I found some sweet fabric on Amazon that as a frequent flyer is just what I wanted. Not only that, it is something that I can enjoy showing off once it is safe to get back up in the air.
After all I am sure, even after I am able to get the vaccine, I will need to have a mask on for a while to come when flying. My wife found a good pattern and used both the AVgeek fabric plus interfacing and then an inside layer of fabric. All washable and high quality.
Lastly she got some soft pipe cleaners and, after a little trial and error, settled on two on either side of the nose. The result, as you can see from the featured image at the top of this post, is a super soft and comfortable mask that fits well and that I can wear all day if I want. But what if you are not good at sewing you ask? Look at this one:
This Honeywell mask is just brilliant ( <-LINK ). They have though outside the box and created a mask that is unlike any other I have seen.
Not only are the ear loops adjustable but the inside has a replaceable 97% effective filter (i.e even better filtering even than N95) that you toss after a day’s use and before you wash the mask.
It does stand out a bit from your fact but that is by design to do this for more comfort. Plus it has a built in nose bridge to adjust snugly over your nose.
As much as I love my homemade AVgeek mask I have to say my new Honeywell one is probably the one I will use on a daily basis for both comfort and protection.
What a neat idea right? – René

Understanding that mask wearing will be important after vaccination is a good point in the article. What is bad is government lying. They say masks protect the public against you. Fake news. They said it because many people were wearing poor quality cloth masks or even bandanas which did not protect the wearer much and they didn’t want a run on good masks, which were needed by hospitals.
The truth of the matter is that masks protect both ways, especially good masks, like surgical masks or N95. If the population is 60% vaccinated, 40% are at risk as well as maybe 10-20% of the vaccinated. The 95% figure is probably under the best, well controlled situation. In real life, there are bad batches, temperature not cold enough, vaccine shaken not like 007 likes, sick people with weak immune systems, second dose too early or too delayed, etc.
Can you provide a link to the pattern and instructions that you used for your face mask? I’ve sewn a bunch of them, but none of them have ever been truly comfortable. Thanks!
