Delta Air Lines announced this morning that middle seats will remain unavailable on its flights until at least April 30, 2021.
In a release published on its website, Delta said:
The airline has consistently listened to its customers and prioritized their preferences by offering more space through seat blocking and reducing the overall number of people on board each flight since April 2020.
“We want our customers to have complete confidence when traveling with Delta, and they continue to tell us that more space provides more peace of mind,” said Bill Lentsch, Chief Customer Experience Officer. “We’ll continue to reassess seat blocking in relation to case transmission and vaccination rates, while bringing back products and services in ways that instill trust in the health and safety of everyone on board – that will always be Delta’s priority.”
This appears to be an extension of the rules Delta announced in late August:
- For customers in parties of 1-2: Middle seats will be blocked.
- For customers in parties of 3 or more: Middle seats will appear as available for booking, to allow families and travel companions to select seats together.
- Limit the total number of customers on board all aircraft – with or without middle seats.
- Block adjacent seats in First Class.
- Block one aisle of seats on aircraft without middle seats.
However, Delta One seats on widebody aircraft are not subject to the airline’s blocked-seat policy.

Delta shows a great deal of concern for the health and well being of passengers and crew. We just flew Delta first class from Hartford CT to Sacramento in October and felt completely safe. . Because of schedule, we flew home on United First class and felt very vulnerable. The difference was night and day starting with boarding and ending in deplaning. Delta gate agents were behind shields, United not. Boarding on Delta was deliberate United allowed passengers to back up on the jetway. Water on Delta was in individual bottles, United served water in open plastic cups (which we refused). Delta flight attendants requested that we deplane one row at a time waiting for the row in front to be 6’ away. United had 10 rows at a time stand and gather their belongings.
I appreciate the efforts by Delta to insure a safe experience for passengers and crew. A shout out to all of the Delta employees who work so hard and maintain such a great attitude.
