Here’s a relatively easy way to make several hundred dollars later this week.

The US Mint is releasing a pair of limited edition coins commemorating the end of World War II. One is the American Eagle Gold Proof Coin and the other is the American Eagle Silver Proof Coin. The sale starts on Thursday, November 5, at 12:00 PM EST.

The Silver coin will sell for $83. PFS Buyers Club estimates that the gold version will cost approximately $2,550. (Plus $4.95 shipping charges for each coin.). There’s a limit of one coin each purchased per household (read: address).

PFS Buyers Club is buying the coins from people who successfully order them — and the profits are fairly big. (This is where you can make some nice coin for buying and reselling nice coins 🙂 .)

Note that you need a PFS account and must make a reservation prior to the sale if you plan to sell to PFS.

They’re paying $150 for the Silver coin, which comes to a profit of $62.05.

But things get really interesting with the Gold. PFS is offering $525.05 a $1000.05 commission for each gold coin.

How It Works

PFS has a fairly detailed description on their site. But here’s the gist:

  • Sign into PFS.
  • Opt-in/create a reservation for the sale.
  • You order the coins and pay for them.
    • These usually sell out within a few minutes. So it’s by no means a slam-dunk.
  • The coins are shipped to you.
  • PFS supplies you with a pre-printed shipping label(s) you attached the box(es) you receive from the Mint. Do not open the boxes. Just ship them.
  • You drop off the box(es) at a shipping center (last time, it was FedEx). Get a receipt.
  • Within a few days, PFS will send your payment. (I opt for PayPal, which is fee-free.)

I’ve done business with PFS. They pay quickly and answer any questions you have. They expect you to be prompt with getting them your order details and shipping the coin as soon as you get it.

As soon as you sign up for PFS, make sure to set up an account with the US Mint (if you don’t already have one). Get your payment preferences, address, and all that other stuff figured out ahead of time. Their website always hangs during big sales. Like with most things in life, it’s good to be prepared.

Don’t Forget Points or Cashback!

The US Mint accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and PayPal. So you should earn applicable points or cashback for your purchase(s) if paying with a rewards card.

If they’re paying you $500 over what you paid, seems to me the coin is worth even more on the open market. Wonder what you can get for it on eBay or the like.

I don’t have much experience selling stuff on eBay — and would be a little nervous about dealing with any problems arising with a sale so big. That’s why I prefer to make something like this quick and easy.

I’ve had really great dealings with PFS. I started with them about 2 years ago and have done several coin purchases with them including one a few weeks ago for a $3,000 coin (they paid $3055). Many times they don’t pay too much like with this Palladium coin a few weeks ago but you get the points/miles on your card so it can be good if you have a sign up spend bonus.

I’ve done 4 deals with them. About the most stressful thing when I first started buying coins for them was they make it a requirement that you do NOT open the box you get from the US Mint. I was thinking worst case scenarios before like the wrong coin would be sent to me. But I’ve never opened the box and directly place the label they email me and I’ve never had problems.

It does take typically about a week for them to PayPal me the cash but I’ve never had any issues with them. A few times I couldn’t get in as I didn’t sign on to the US Mint right before the coins are offered. You have to realistically sign on 5 minutes before and keep refreshing and immediately add to cart. Even if you’re ready sometimes the US Mint site crashes and when it comes back it’s too late.

Same. And that US Mint site is such a pain. I have alarms set for 8:50 AM Pacific on Thursday morning so I can get logged in and start refreshing at 8:55.

Oh snap! Pointsmaker (who I do a lot of deals with and I think is the best buying service platform) just offered me $950 commission for the gold coin! So I’d assume most people will end up selling their coin to them if PFS doesn’t increase their offer!

      Yep, I know, thanks. If I get a commission, great. If I don’t, I don’t.

I was able to buy a silver coin but I was not able to buy a gold coin. I actually had a gold coin in my bag before I tried the silver coin but the web site kept on giving an error. I was able to start the checkout process but after entering my credit card number and pressing the proceed button, it errored out again. I refreshed and it came back to the same place and I tried again but then it told me it was sold out. I do not know how it was able to sell out while it was crashing like this and I don’t understand how, in the space of a couple of minutes, an item can be taken when it’s in someone’s bag, if that person was logged in as I was. At least I got a silver coin, that was hard enough to complete.
