Some cartoons and other kids-oriented programming my daughter watches on Disney+, YouTube Kids, and similar platforms already introduced her — virtually — to parts of the world.
Thanks to Peppa Pig, my three-year-old can identify pictures of the Eiffel Tower. (The video below is a favorite of ours.)
And movies such as 101 Dalmatians and Peter Pan (the classic cartoon versions, at least) predominantly feature London.
My daughter’s mouth drops when we watch Peter Pan and company soar over London — and I tell her, “I’ve been there.”
“You have, Daddy?” she asks, her eyes wide open.
“Mmm-hmmm,” I say. “Would you like to visit London someday?”
Somehow, her eyes grow even bigger.
“Yes, please!” she sings back.
Other times, she’ll recognize the Eiffel Tower in a picture, coloring book, or television program.
“Can we see the Eiffel Tower, Daddy?”
“Of course. I’ll take you there sometime. You and me.”
I’m confident giving these responses because I know I’ll find a way to make it happen. Whether it’s using award tickets or finding a great fare, my daughter will get to see London, Paris, and many more places around the world.
That’s one of the great things about the points and miles hobby. We can not only take fun trips for ourselves — but introduce others to the world.
My wife and I plan on waiting for several years, though, until we bring her along on any big international trips. We want her to be old enough to remember the trips, sights, tastes, and other experiences.
And by that point, she’ll (hopefully) not expect to see Peter Pan darting around Tower Bridge or bump into her pal Peppa at the Eiffel Tower.
But maybe Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben’s renovation will finally be complete when my daughter and I visit London in a few years. (Though I’m not holding my breath. 🙂 )
