Delta Air Lines just became the latest airline to waive some change fees, posting the announcement just a few minutes ago.
The move comes on the heels of United making a similar announcement yesterday.
The airline said the elimination of change fees is effective immediately. The move affects travel within:
- the domestic United States (I’ll assume this covers Hawaii and Alaska.)
- Puerto Rico
- U.S. Virgin Islands
Delta First Class, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin tickets are covered. A notable exception appears to be Basic Economy tickets.
The carrier also said it will “extend its waiver on change fees for newly purchased flights, including international flights and Basic Economy fares, through the end of the year and will extend its expiration on travel credits through December 2022 for tickets booked before April 17, 2020.”
Final Approach
This is a good move on Delta’s part — though I’m curious to see if (and when and how) they make up for it with airfare increases.
It would be nice if Delta simply pulled a Southwest and said No change fees on any tickets to any destination instead of something that reads a bit like the “Huh?”-inspiring nature of NFL overtime’s rules.
