Delta Air Lines announced this morning it’s extending a change fee waiver originally set to expire today.
“[T]o ensure customers can travel with confidence, we’re … continuing to offer added flexibility if their travel plans change during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the carrier said. “That’s why we’re extending our change fee waiver for new flights purchased through July 31, providing customers the option to change their plans without a fee for a year from the date of purchase.” (Bold mine.)
Plus, passengers who canceled travel between March and September 2020 now may rebook travel through September 30, 2022. Those with upcoming travel already booked between now and September 30 (as of April 17, 2020) also have until 9-30-2022 to rebook.
Keep in mind that fare differences may apply.
Final Approach
I think this is a good move on Delta’s part. It encourages people to book future travel. And if people take advantage of that, Delta gets more liquidity sooner than later — which is vital right now.

How about award tickets booked now? Can they be cancelled for free?
Per Delta: “We are waiving change fees and Award redeposit fees for travel impacted by coronavirus. This applies to domestic and international travel departing March through September 30, 2020, as well as all tickets purchased between March 1 and July 31, 2020.”
