Delta Air Lines announced today it will require passengers to “to wear a face mask or appropriate face covering” when traveling on the airline.

The rule is a “temporary requirement” and goes into effect on Monday, May 4.

Delta will supply masks — but encourages passengers to bring their own.

Passengers will need face masks (or other coverings) pretty much everywhere during their Delta travels. Per the airline, this includes:

  • check-in lobby
  • Delta Sky Clubs
  • boarding areas
  • jet bridges
  • on board aircraft for entire flights – except meal service

Children and others “unable to keep a face covering in place” are exempt from the requirement.

That’s wonderful, from today to May 4 passengers can cough their respiratory droplets onto the rest of the plane!

Why not start right now (or a month ago)?

Welp, I had hoped Delta would not bow to the public/sheep bleating for more security theater… but they have.

I have a number of trips booked with Delta, and I don’t wear a mask.
It’s just super creepy and makes me feel very unsafe/unhealthy around other humans.

I guess I have to cancel some trips because of this.
What a mess. No thanks Delta… Why do you give into the masses? Why?

      Creepy? Unsafe? HA!
This is being implemented in the best interest of yourself and of fellow passengers, in many airlines across the globe.

At this moment we do not know who has the virus – could be the person near you at security, or sitting beside you onboard.
The use of masks (and gloves) greatly minimizes the risk of contamination.

And who cares if it looks creepy? Isn’t health more important?

So who is going to enforce this? In Chicago, are they going to send the Chicago Aviation police to drag people out of the airport for noncompliance?

Are they going to divert the plane to Alaska when I take my mask off 4 hours into a SEA-ICN flight in a Delta One suite.

@Jeffrey – Not listening to the instructions of the crew can have very bad consequences so do be careful!

@George: It’s all about public image and virtue signaling. Delta bends over backward to avoid bad press. They don’t want to be the one that gets hammered by the totally loony press and hysteria crazed social media ‘influencers.’ Also, delta doesn’t want to give leverage to the flight attendants union and their on-going organization efforts.

What about my Delta One flights with a suite and closed door where each seat is more than 6 feet away from the nearest person? Am I expected to wear a mask for 12 hours?

As a Delta Diamond you must know that your choice is either to wear a mask or not fly. I like masks no more than you do but starting up with flight attendants is never a good idea.

Delta’s free to require masks, and I’m free to abandon Delta. It’s a free country, or it used to be.
