The Grim Reaper is Coming to Florida Beaches

Scary looking grim reaper ghost coming out of the foggy mist. The haunting creepy demon depicts death and evil and is a common Halloween theme as well as Day of the Dead.

Plan to visit a Florida beach next week? You might see the Grim Reaper.

Florida lawyer and political activist Daniel Uhlfelder really wants people to stay home — despite Governor Ron DeSantis’ decision to reopen some of the state’s beaches.

“People aren’t getting the message, so I thought, well, what would really make the message of, ‘Hey, we’re prematurely doing this, and it’s a matter of life and death. Let’s take a pause’?” he told People. “There’s nothing really as direct of a symbol of death as the Grim Reaper, and this virus kills people with real regularity.”

He’s correct: that certainly is one way of drawing attention.

Many of you have asked if I am willing to travel around Florida wearing Grim Reaper attire to the beaches and other areas of the state opening up prematurely. The answer is absolutely yes. Beginning May 1 we will hit the road here in state. Please retweet and spread the word. pic.twitter.com/UO7QKg161n

(Best reply: “Is that the deathguard?” from @davepaisley)

His tour of the Sunshine State isn’t solely for promoting social distancing awareness, though. He’s raising money for his PAC.

Perhaps he could (literally) get warmed up by starting here in Los Angeles this weekend, where officials are warning people to stay away from beaches despite a big heat wave.

crazy If people social distance on the beach in the outside with fresh air there should be NO PROBLEM…probably safer than going to the Grocery store or walmart!!!

If the political leaders of Florida, advised by the doctors, have decided that it’s safe to reopen some of the beaches, then the Grim Reaper need not worry about scaring others into compliance with his beliefs. It’s like the journalists that were trying to scare Sweden into changing their strategy because they were so sure they were right. Well now Sweden’s’ strategy appears to be working and the last laugh is on them. I would bet that there are many supporters of such a strategy here in America, too scared to say so for fear of being mocked.

If you have any evidence that he opened the beach on advice of the medical community, I’d like to see it. I have seen no evidence that he looked at any medical advice.

The Grim Reaper is no more trying to impose his belief’s on everyone else than you are in your post above. He’s simply giving his opinion, just as you gave yours.

And the idea that Sweden’s strategy is working is the laughable thing. They have 10 times the deaths of Norway (5 x as many on a population basis ) , and Norway is clearly on the down count, Sweden not so much.

Those of us who are born and raised in Florida wouldn’t even look twice at this getup. In fact, I suspect he will have a line for pictures. Half the population already has one foot in the grave anyways.

This lawyer is toxic. Florida took a completely different approach to New York in dealing with the coronavirus and has 1/10th the deaths despite having the same population and an older one at that. Governor DeSantis smartly focused mitigation efforts on nursing homes where the national guard distributed 6 million masks to health care workers and residents and national guard did disinfection cleaning and spot testing of workers in these nursing homes. Florida is much less dense than New York and as seen with the much lower death and infection rate the policy has worked. Completely stay at home policies may be necessary in NY (although Governor a Cuomo and Mayor DeBlasio failed to shutdown the subways) but in Florida it is ok to get air and exercise as long as social distancing is practiced. Let healthy people enjoy the beaches as long as the most vulnerable populations are safeguarded at home or in nursing homes. It’s not healthy to be cooped up for so long. As long as beach goers are keeping apart it is a fair easing of the rules given the successful mitigation efforts and declining infection numbers.
