JetBlue Consolidates Operations in Several Major Cities

JetBlue announced today it’s consolidating operations in five major US markets.

From April 15 through June 10, JetBlue will operate out of fewer airports in Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. Several airports will see drastic daily flight decreases — into single digits.

“JetBlue also intends to file an exemption request with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to temporarily suspend flying at other airports where the airline typically operates only a handful of daily flights and where current demand does not support JetBlue service,” the airline added.

Boston

Flights will operate only out of Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and JetBlue will suspend service at T. F. Green International Airport (PVD).

The airline normally operates 180 flights a day through those airports. However, they’ll conduct only 28 daily operations during April.

Los Angeles

Operations will be suspended at Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) and Ontario International Airport (ONT). Only Los Angeles International (LAX) and Long Beach Airport (LGB) will have LA-area JetBlue flights, which are dropping from 44 daily services to just 5.

New York

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) will operate JetBlue’s 30 daily NYC flights — down from 215.

B6’s flights from LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Westchester County Airport (HPN) and Stewart International Airport (SWF) will be suspended.

San Francisco

The Bay Area’s two daily flights (down from 19) will depart from San Francisco International (SFO). Operations at San Jose Mineta (SJC) will temporarily shutter.

Washington, D.C.

Washington’s Reagan National Airport (DCA) will operate DC’s five daily JetBlue flights, with the airline suspending service at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).

Will Other Airlines Follow Suit?

I wonder if we’ll see other airlines consolidate their operations, as well.

Delta, for example, suspended its Burbank-Atlanta service. Its only Delta operations are three (sometimes two) daily flights from BUR to SLC. And those are aboard regional jets. I won’t be at all surprised if Delta were to suspend those flights. (Although Southwest still flies BUR to SLC, so perhaps that’s what may keep Delta there).

JetBlue suspended flights from Burbank so that means I’ll take Southwest with a stop. Rather do that than go across town to LAX. Looking forward to JetBlue’s return though.
