Salt Lake City International Airport has been evacuated and is currently “not operational” following a 5.7 earthquake this morning, which meteorologist Matthew Cappucci says was about four miles west of SLC.

The airport is not currently operational. The FAA tower, terminals and concourses have been evacuated. The road to the airport has been opened, so that passengers can be picked-up.

The FAA says flights are being diverted to other airports and Salt Lake Air Route Traffic Control Center is taking care of air traffic.

As if airlines and passengers needed one more thing to deal with right now…

    @Chris

    USGS earthquake map shows 34 tremors 2.5+ there in last 3 hours (the 5.7 was first one of any recordable magnitude near the epicenter in last 30 day).

    Friends living in area report widespread damage and power outages. Hoping only minor, or better yet no injuries from this event.

      87 aftershocks so far in the 8 hours since this morning’s 5.7 quake, with a couple hitting 4.5 and 4.6. Between that and Covid-19 upending daily lives, the folks both living and stuck in SLC, city and airport, have definitely more than earned their normalcy to be back to normal again.

    Wow. I am in Denver on an award ticket and I fly home to San Jose on Friday. There is a winter storm watch in Denver and I only had a 41 minute layover at SLC, so yesterday I moved the flight to connect through LAX with a two hour layover to provide time for de-icing in Denver. I also got 4,000 miles refunded. I doubt I could do that today.

    I live about 30 miles south of SLC. We felt the rolling shake, our home creaked but had no damage and we didn’t lose power. I have a friend that lives about 4 miles from the epicenter, they had it much worse. Here’s a link to his neighbor’s doorbell:

    I will say that the 4.6 aftershock early pm was really something, I had gone to my office, 5th floor of a newer building, we were really moving!!!
