Virgin Atlantic recently announced the end of chauffeured car service for Upper Class passengers. Because rideshare is all the rage these days, that got us wondering: would you be more inclined to purchase a Delta Air Lines flight if Lyft credit to and from the airport were included?
For something like full, roundtrip credit to be even remotely possible, it probably would be reserved for people traveling in Delta One — or even just Delta One Suites.
But even if Delta offered some sort of tiered discount (i.e. 25% for first class, 20% for Premium Select, 15% for Comfort+, 10% for Main Cabin, and 5% for Basic Economy), that might entice some people to give Delta their business.
And Lyft seems like an obvious rideshare partner, too, given that you can earn SkyMiles with each Lyft ride (assuming you’re comfortable with that).
Why Some People Might Not Use the Service
Full, 100% ride credit to/from flights is something many people might not turn down. 🙂
Discounts would be great selling tools — but I wonder how many people would actually take advantage of the offer.
Some take subways or light rail service to the airport — and skip traffic altogether.
I live about 30 miles from LAX. Lyft and Uber generally cost anywhere between $45-$95 each way, depending on the time of day. It’s far cheaper for me to park near the airport and walk or take a shuttle.
Plus, my toddler needs a car seat whenever she rides in a car. Installing and uninstalling car seats is a pain in the you-know-what. So driving ourselves is more cost- and time-efficient. While Delta-issued Lyft discounts would be a nice gesture, I don’t know that I’d actually use them.

China Eastern has also ended their complementary limo service, as least for SFO. I last used the service in November. A rideshare credit would be a nice replacement. For me, the value would be about $120.
Several times I was driven in a Cadillac Escalade, which seemed wasteful. Also, I found the airport pickup less convenient than hailing a rideshare.
I fly mostly out of and back to LAX. With the current ride share setup at LAX, having to go to the east side of T1, a Lyft or Uber credit would not mean a thing to me.
