Here’s When Las Vegas Might Host a Super Bowl

Las Vegas — a city long linked to the Super Bowl because of the game’s popularity with gamblers — now has an even bigger interest in the NFL championship.

The Las Vegas Raiders recently relocated from Oakland. Their new home — Allegiant Stadium — opens this year.

And the 2020 NFL Draft takes place in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip this April.

All this begs this question: when will Las Vegas host its first Super Bowl?

Quick Primer on Super Bowl Sites

Super Bowl sites change each year. Most host cities are in warmer climates or have indoor stadiums where the big game can be played.

Preference is generally given to newer, bigger, grander stadia. In recent years, the game has been played at relatively new venues such as Levi’s Stadium in San Jose, US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Upgraded or renovated facilities — such as Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, which hosts this year’s contest — also receive consideration.

Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium in Inglewood opens up this season — a year late because construction was hampered by rain. (If you’re not familiar, rain and Southern California don’t get along. At all.) SoFi Stadium hosts Super Bowl LVI on February 6, 2022.

So with their own new stadium opening, when will the Super Bowl be in Las Vegas?

A Las Vegas Super Bowl?!

Sin City has long been associated with this contest. Most — if not all — of its gambling establishments set betting odds for the game. There’s even a list of interesting “prop bets”— ranging from which player will score the game’s first points, to how long the word “brave” will be sung during the “Star-Spangled Banner.”

A Super Bowl game in Las Vegas would be a dream come true for many sports lovers.

So when might this glorious event take place?

Not for a while. Like, we’ll see two Presidential elections before a Super Bowl kicks off in Vegas.

But there is hope.

“You might want to start browsing hotel rooms for the last week of January 2025,” writes the Las Vegas Sun‘s Case Keefer.

That season’s big game is “expected to take place on February 2, 2025,” (bold mine) and “is the next NFL championship game without an announced location.”

Just because that’s the first open date doesn’t mean it’s a lock, though. But as of right now, it’s not a bad bet.
