First Look: Delta SkyMiles Select Welcome Pack!

About two months after I ordered Delta’s new $59 feature giving passengers “priority” boarding, discounted drink tickets, and a luggage tag (brag tag), my Delta SkyMiles Select welcome pack arrived yesterday.

Back in October, I purchased SkyMiles Select to see if it counted toward the American Express Platinum Card‘s annual airline incidental credit. And it did! It was one of the purchases — besides change fees, checked luggage, and onboard food and beverage — that triggered the credit.

(Interesting aside: someone opened the envelope during transit. Maybe they didn’t know the drink tickets are electronically deposited into the Fly Delta app’s “My Wallet” section.)

An opened/tampered Delta SkyMiles Select envelope

I purchased SkyMiles Select on October 16. The eight drink tickets (valued at $80, but purchased for $59 — a nice value) were automatically added to my Fly Delta app within a minute that day.

Drink tickets from Delta SkyMiles Select are seen inside the My Wallet section of the Fly Delta app.

The Main Cabin 1 / “priority” boarding zone should be automatically added to members’ reservations — just the same as it is for Delta Amex cardholders. (Although, keep in mind gate agent shena sort of devalues this perk.)

Inside the envelope was a brand-spankin’ new brag tag:

Delta SkyMiles Select luggage tag (brag tag) and strap.

Also included is a plastic loop for affixing the tag to luggage. Personally, I love these metal rings that run about $6 for a pack of 20.

The tiny print at the bottom left is something you may want to keep in mind. It says:

By tagging photos using #SkyMilesLife, user grants Delta Air Lines a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual license to display, reproduce and create derivative works. Full terms: delta.com/skymileslife

Basically, Delta can profit off your social media posts when you tag them. Sure, it might score you a couple of hundred more followers if they use your material — and give them a nice paycheck.

Will I Use the SkyMiles Select Brag Tag?

Probably not. I have my Medallion brag tags, thankyouverymuch, so no. 😉 . If my daughter wants it, it’s hers.

Quick Aside

Here’s an interesting, peculiar observation: my 2019 Platinum Medallion kit arrived about seven months late. The SkyMiles Select package, though, took only two months to show up. One might reasonably think Delta’s “most loyal customers” (their words) should experience better service than those ponying up just $59 for status-lite.

I have lost a couple of expensive luggage tags due to those little metal things coming unscrewed. I know it does not look business like, but I now just zip tie my tags to the luggage. We do a bunch of cruises and you turn your luggage over to baggage handlers who are a bit rough on the bags. On very long trips overseas we have to check bags. Since going to the zip ties, we have lost no luggage tags. I could care less what someone might think about using a zip tie, but it works.

@John – #ProTip – Use a tiny dot of super glue when you close the metal loops. Then it will never ever come off (well, almost never that is).

@Rene can you buy this for a friend or two to utilize the credit?

@Monsrat – Chris was the one who tested this but I would think so. It is the coding and the charge that matters – not who gets it. For example, with most cards that offer Global Entry credits, you can pay for anyone you want and get the credit.

I too have had the problem with the metal cables coming undone.

I now use a spare key ring to attach brah tags.

Off-topic, but I just got through with a Delta Supervisor who confirmed that Diamonds (I have been for 5 years) will no longer automatically be upgraded to comfort plus on a main cabin ticket. My leg from Maui to LAX has 3 C+ seats (all window seats) available but the “system” will not let me have any of the 3. The first Diamond rep said “there are zero available”. When I pointed out that I could buy any of the 3 C+ seats online, so they are definitely 3 available, he passed me to the Supervisor. She tried to tell me they were already sold, but not yet claimed. I pointed out again that no, I can buy them right now, so they aren’t sold. She put me on hold, and spoke to someone higher up, and sheepishly came back on the line to tell me that Delta “holds back some of the C+ seats for direct purchase, instead of “giving” them to Medallions.” So, when you look at available seats prior to purchase, those C+ that appear available may not actually be, once you purchase. I believe it’s called “Bait and Switch”. A new low for Delta.

Lucky you! I have been platinum for two years with three coming up and NEVER received a brag tag or welcome kit. 8-(
