Here’s a mileage run tailored to the ultimate procrastinator!
This Aeromexico business class run leaves New York’s JFK on December 30, arrives in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic on New Year’s Eve, and gets you back to New York a few minutes into 2020!
For Delta, a flight’s actual departure date and time determine when its eligible to be credited for SkyMiles. So because the return departs on December 31, this run will count for your totals earned in 2019. Even if the totals take a few days to process, they should apply retroactively to this year.
The only thing that makes me a little nervous? If something goes wrong or there’s a major delay, you’ll be out the 2019 MQD.
The general routing is JFK-MEX-SDQ-MEX-JFK. The trip currently prices out at $901.25.
This mileage run is estimated to travel 8,018 miles. So because of how Delta awards partner travel when you credit it to your SkyMiles account, this trip will earn you:
- $3207 MQD
- 12,054 MQM (@ 7.5 CPM)
- 16,036 base SkyMiles (plus Medallion bonus: Diamond + 120%; Platinum + 80%; Gold + 60%; Silver + 40%)
As usual, these are Y-UP fares. There have been, in the past, some issues with getting correct credit with Y-UPs from AeroMexico. All data points suggest this problem has been fixed — but be sure to save all your boarding passes and follow these steps to make sure you get correct credit!
The trip is bookable on Aeromexico.com. If you can’t find seats on Aeromexico’s site, however, begin your search at JustFly, which earns $16 through Top Cashback.
This (and most Aeromexico) run goes through Mexico City, which has a Centurion Lounge (read Rene’s review). So if you don’t yet have a Platinum Card® from American Express or Business Platinum Card® from American Express to get you into the Centurion Lounge, now would be a great time to consider applying.

Too Risky for Tastes?
If you’d (wisely) rather meet your MQD requirements sooner than December 31, give a holler to the mileage run department at Juicy Miles. A number of Rene’s Points readers have booked mileage runs through Adam and his team.
Get Travel Insurance and a Card that Protects You
Keep in mind this run lands smack dab in the middle of winter. Protect yourself with a travel insurance plan from Travelex or Allianz.
While we all love earning 5X on purchases made directly with airlines when paying with the Platinum Card® from American Express, consider using one of these cards that come with Chase’s travel interruption coverage:
Ink Business Preferred Card (3x on travel, up to $150,000 in combined purchases each anniversary year)
Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card (3x on travel, $300 annual travel credit and Priority Pass membership)
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Card (2x on travel)
