Heads up if you (or someone you know) is traveling through Amsterdam Schiphol on Sunday or Monday. (Or both, if you’re weekend elite mileage running!) A pair of strikes — including one from KLM workers — threaten to give travelers headaches.
In fact, Delta issued a travel waiver for Monday, September 2 (Labor Day).
Sunday, September 1 Strike
Schiphol security staff is scheduled to strike on Sunday. “Dutch labour union FNV has announced short work interruptions at Schiphol’s security on Sunday 1 September,” reads a statement on Schiphol’s website. “The interruptions will occur several times during the day. Please be aware that during these interruptions, waiting times at security may be longer than normal.
The NL Times reports rolling strikes will begin at 7:30 AM and continue every half hour for the next 12 hours.
KLM adds, “Throughout the day, the security checks will be closed multiple times, for 33 minutes at a time. The closure of the security checks will rotate, so there is always a checkpoint open. However, this will lead to longer queues at the security check. Please anticipate on extra time.”
Monday, September 2 Strike
In a move that is projected to cause flight delays and cancellations, KLM ground workers are set to walk off the job Monday morning from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
“KLM regrets this and will do its utmost to limit the inconvenience for its passengers,” the airline says. “We therefore ask our passengers to carefully follow the information on the KLM website and the KLM App on Sunday evening and Monday.”
Delta has even issued a travel waiver for Monday travel through Amsterdam. Tickets must be reissued by September 7th, with rescheduled travel beginning no later than that date, as well.
