Delta expects to operate 200 daily nonstop flights from its newest official hub — Boston Logan — in 2021.

(For reference, that’s about half the number of daily takeoffs from Minneapolis.)

Forbes‘ Ted Reed notes the mothership currently operates 140 peak daily departures at Logan (including partner flights) That number will increase to 150 by March 2020.

This is great news for travelers — especially, of course, Delta passengers. It’s even better for Boston travelers enjoying complimentary Gold and Platinum status while Delta ramps up operations.

War with JetBlue?

Boston is a JetBlue hub — which means things could get interesting.

New York, USA - April 30, 2012: Airbus A320 JetBlue approaches John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, NY on April 30, 2012. The A320 was the first narrow body airliner from Airbus. It is the biggest competition to Boeing 737NG.

Jon Chesto of the Boston Globe points out that JetBlue plans to exceed 175 daily departures — this year. And they’ll reach 200 “in the coming years,” says JetBlue’s Director of Route Planning, Andrea Lusso.

Hopefully, the DL vs. B6 competition will mean good fares — and maybe some Elite Mileage Runs!

Delta’s effort to crush Alaska Airlines at SEA seems to have failed. Maybe it will have better luck with Jet Blue in BOS. Or maybe Jet Blue finds it advantageous to merge with… Alaska. We’ll see.

B/t/w in spite of the common use of the term, there ain’t no such thing as a non-stop flight.:)

@john: 🙂 What’s the correct term? (I know “non-stop” can also sound like a flight that never ends…which, in some cases, sounds pretty darn fun!)

In this case the correct term is “flights.” Yes, there have been a bunch of flights were I was sorry to hear the double ding.

You could say that there are “non-stop” (direct flight) itineraries, but every flight stops at its destination.

@John and @Jon: Now I’m getting grief on Twitter saying that every flight is a non-stop.

      Oh, Mondays.

      😉
