Europe’s two largest air carriers — British Airways and Lufthansa — today suspended flights to Cairo, Egypt due to “security concerns.”
Neither airline disclosed any specific threat at the time of this post.
CBC Newsreports that BA has halted operations between London Heathrow and Cairo for the next seven days.
Lufthansa quickly followed suit, canceling Cairo-bound flights from Munich and Frankfurt. The airline expects to resume those routes on Sunday.
“The moves come as Britain weighs its response to Iran’s seizure Friday of a British-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and rising tensions stemming from U.S. sanctions’ effect on Iran’s economy and oil exports, the CBC notes. “The strait and the Egyptian capital are separated by 2,500 kilometres and Egypt has long had a contentious relationship with Iran.”
EgyptAir flights between Heathrow and Cairo are operating as normal, notesAlex Macheras via Twitter. He reports that BA is rebooking some passengers on oneworld alliance partners.
