What an unexpected treat this was. I had booked two Quito Ecuador mileage runs back to back and had expected to fly the AeroMexico 787-8 both times but AeroMexico substituted a 787-9. There are few words I can put on paper to express how impressive this jet is and this seat choice.

a seat with a screen on it

As always I compare everything to Delta and with this top end seat to the Delta One Suites (with doors). Let me start with a spoiler alert – this seat crushes the Delta Suites. I will explain why as we proceed.

rows of computers in an airplane

First off having overhead space, with air vents, matters. Other than the first middle row you get that (and why you should avoid middle row one btw).

a plane with many seats

If you are traveling alone the side seats are near perfect.

a seat in an airplane

My only super tiny gripe is, like on the 787-8, is the access to the window dimmer buttons.

a window on an airplane

Then again, since the crew controls all the cabin windows when they want to, it really is not a big deal.

a tv on a shelf in an airplane

The IFE is responsive and the screen size is more than adequate for the space.

a white machine with a screen and a screen

Controls are on screen or easily accessible in a compartment. I just love this design. You have access to the sound port, USB power as well as 110 power all right at your finger tips. Brilliant. Now on to storage.

a sink in an airplane

Just behind the IFE control is a tiny storage compartment with a mirror. One of the biggest gripes about all of Delta’s “One” family of seats is the absolute lack of any storage at all. This AeroMexico seat has them all over.

a small hole in a wall

They have just found space everywhere and either left them open for you to place stuff or hidden them with a door.

a arm rest on a plane

a toilet seat open with a lid open

Like your left armrest there is yet another compartment. It is funny it is labeled no storage (because why?).

a white plastic bin with a grey seat

The armrest / storage compartment does fold down if you would like to have more open space (and during takeoff and landing).

a metal handle on a seat

It is amazing how bad many tray table designs can be. This one is hands down one of my favorites. It tucks out of the way and is simple, via the catch under the tray, to slide in and out. The fold out is firm and if you tinker with the little plastic catch just top right of the tray you can slide it back while still folded out. Very handy.

a close up of a light

Even the tiny reading light is in a good spot and provides just enough light to read (and is not in the overhead contaminating others around you with light). So smart.

a screen on a vehicle

Seat controls are right at your fingers, simple and easy to understand and use. As you can see there is very little to complain about with this impressive business class full flat seat design.

a glass with a liquid in it

The meal choices were the same as on the 787-8 flight a few days before but this time I chose the pasta vs. the fish.

a plate of food and drinks on a table

a tray with food on it

a plate with fruit and whipped cream on it

The pasta was fine but unremarkable. The salad was good but had more beans that greens. Cold artichoke is not for me.

a blue menu with a white logo

a menu with text on it

a menu with black text

I really wish AeroMexico would improve all their meal choices (because AeroMexico Kosher is not for me either).

a white counter with a light on it

a table with a few plates of food and a laptop

Also worth covering is there is a self service bar between the larger front and smaller mid business class cabin including a coffee machine. I would have liked to have seen wine and not just hard liquor as choices.

an airplane flying over a runway

I am just so impressed with the 787-9. The quiet ride, the fast takeoff, the dimmable windows, the “feel” of the jet, this simply amazing full flat seat – oh my. Even a good feeling of privacy without half plastic doors. I will be actively looking for opportunities to book this jet when AeroMexico is an option for where I am going. Oh that and the boatload of Delta points and MQDs I earn when I credit the flight to Delta SkyMiles, clearly.

What do you think? Have you had a chance to fly this jet? Were you as impressed as I was? – René

Rene, thanks for the review. Just curious, did you purchase business class or get upgraded?

Agree on the 789 business class being amazing. Have done 2 RTs with AM recently — to Santiago, Chile and San Jose, Costa Rica and the absolute highlight was the MEX-JFK segment on the 789. Had the 738 and 788 on other sectors which are night and day differences to 789. Also agree that AM soft product is meh… it does the job but wont win any awards. My kids did enjoy the breakfast spread in MEX though — my daughter dreams of the chilaquiles.

Hey Rene, very good review thanks ! .. Yeah have used this AM product multiple times on the JFK-MEX run, and 100% agree with your comments about the hard product, it´s hard to beat for this route. Delta flies a lie flat configured 757 (75S) on Saturdays almost year round on the same route, but this 789 config/comfort is superior by all means and by the fares that come up sometimes in J. As of AM Service, hmm yeah, hit or miss basically, although I have had very good experiences as well to be honest.

Any chance to post bigger pictures on your blog?? Also the ads you are showing on the side are bigger than your content space in the middle. Makes it very annoying to read.
