Does Delta Air Lines fly the Boeing 737 MAX Jets? No. Are the other Delta 737 Jets the Same? No!

The 1st Delta 737-900ER passenger flight.

There. I “Saved You A Click,” if you will. But Delta does fly a bunch of 737s right? Yes, they are not the same as the MAX jets everyone is worried about. Delta flies the 737 Next Gen models 737-700, 737-800 and a BUNCH (over half the 737 fleet) of the 737-900s. A number of brand new 737-900s have been delivered this year with a few more on the way under the most current order.

So let me again stress – these are not the same jet as the MAX even though they carry the 737 “name.” I do understand folks are nervous right now and I encourage you today to take the time to read an amazing piece by Jon Ostrower about the differences and history of the MAX jet vs. the others.

I also this week read a Yahoo Finance post with what looked like a “click bait” headline that said: “The Boeing 737 Max is now the deadliest mainstream jetliner“. As they point out in that piece “The 737 Max has only flown about 500,000 flights” and that matters. Just look at how safe the rest of the 737 (100/200/300/400/500/600/700/800/900) family of aircraft are when you compare flights to deaths (gruesome but how they compute the numbers). If you fly Delta domestically, you are very likely going to be on one of the 207 Boeing 737s they fly and you should feel safe and secure in the air (I do and I fly them all the time).

Uh, whooppss!

Thus safety is NOT an issue with the Delta Air Lines 737 fleet. The discussion of the Delta 737-900ER as to the unique ground characteristics (it can require a tail stand to prevent loading / unloading issues) is very different. The same goes for the interior seating pros and cons. I may choose to avoid a Delta 737 vs. another of the 890 jets they fly but it is about personal comfort choices – not a safety choice! – René

    Hey Rene,

Things may have changed. My friend was flying on DL last night SJU-JFK and I was tracking her flight via PLANES LIVE and just about fell out of my seat when I saw the plane was a Boeing 737 MAX 9! I thought these were still grounded along with the MAX 8? It will be a long time if ever that I or my loved ones would fly comfortably on these MAX aircrafts. Please advise.

@John – Delta does not fly the MAX 8 or 9. It was another 737 sub-type. The PLANES LIVE had bad info.

    I don’t trust the Boeing 737 – Max.
Too many issues with that plane.
I’ve read the the reports from Boeing, FAA, and NTSB.

If I ever saw on my itinerary a 737-Max, I’ll avoid that plane at any costs.

Boeing needs to start with a new design and layout for a plane.

Supposedly the old Boeing designers tried to warn Boeing Corporate re the design flaws. But Corporate decided on the greed instead vs safety.

Bottom line you’ll never see me or my family on a Boeing 737 – Max
