PS vs coach – yes please!

For those who do not know, Delta is famous for flying jets a very long time. This can mean some seats are just worn out and WAY past their glory days. The jets themselves are fine as Delta does an amazing job of maintenance on the airframe itself. But the 777 fleet is in need of an interior redo and that is happening now and we will see the first one (at least scheduled) to fly from the USA on 2JULY18 Detroit to Beijing (DTW-PEK).

Nice 777 seatmap

While these older jets are not as quiet, on the inside, as the new Delta “flagship” A350, the interior will look remarkably the same with 28 Delta One Suites on the 777 vs. 32 on the A350. Premium Select will have the same number of seats and main cabin coach 6 extra. Do notice the last row of coach has a 2 seat choice the A350 does not have. Could be nice if you are just two of you traveling.

When you look at this one single date above, as a one way price, the Premium Select is a no brainer choice over coach since you get such a better seat and service plus the same meal (served on one tray) as the Delta One Suite folks up front.

The first ever Skyteam MegaDo

The first EVER Skyteam MegaDo is now on sale <-LINK. A MegaDo is a singularly unique event and this one looks like a ton of fun spread out across the USA and Europe. While not cheap, it is a once in a lifetime type event and for AVgeeks really a treat. I would like to attend but can not commit at this time. BTW I am told the Delta “discounted” prices to fly are really bad and you may want look at other choices to get from Seattle to Amsterdam (and back from Barcelona). You can do an open jaw with a SkyMiles award FYI.

Now on to the other travel bits that caught my attention this past week that I neglected to toss up over the weekend:

  • Gogo CEO Concedes Company Lost Its Way
  • SkyWest Will Be Impacted By American’s Decision To Cut Ties With ExpressJet
  • CFPB Considers Ending Public Access to Complaints About Banks (behind WSJ paywall fyi)

  • Air France to ‘disappear?’ New strike, new fears
  • Higher jet-fuel prices may crimp your summer travel budget
  • Travelers paid airlines a record $4.6 billion last year to check their luggage
  • The ABOVE story on bags is why you MUST hold at least 1 Delta Amex card!

So you tell me. Are you excited about the 777 “mods” on the way? What about the MegaDo – are you going? Anything else we all should know about? Comment below! – René

It’s about time for Delta to upgrade their planes that fly internationally in and out of MSP. They use A330, 777 and 767 and they are in desperate need of cleaning and a refresh.

28 seats in a 777? I guess you can cal that the end of upgrades —- American has 37 and I thought that was ridiculous. United has anywhere from 50-60

I recently flew in the new Premium Select seats from NRT->DTW and was very disappointed in the seats. There were 3 of us together in middle section, and I had the aisle. At 6′ 3″ I had very little legroom, and when the seat in front of me was reclined, it was extremely difficult to get out of my seat due to the non-moveable armrest. While the nicer food, headphones, and screen were all a plus, the lack of legroom killed the experience for me.

We just flew PEK – DTW in Suites and were honestly underwhelmed by the configuration. My out-side door didn’t even function. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice. But it’s not that much of a physical upgrade in my opinion. Service, on the other hand, was superior to any I’ve had on DL international routes. Wine and food – fair to good. Still not comparable to BA or AF premium long haul. Of interest, the head attendant was surveying all of us near end of flight and said he’d heard many of same comments.

Most disappointing was using GUC’s. More than a month out with 20+ unsold seats, we were waitlisted. Morning of – 17 open seats. Still no confirmation until 30 mins ahead after watching the seats tick down to three open seats as other people (most non-revenue) were upgraded ahead of us.

@Edward – I was told, on the inaugural flight by an “OPS” guy that one day all the doors would be gone or fixed in the open position. So they know about that issue. Yes, the GU cert issue is maddening. That is just one of many #FAILs of the SkyMiles team IMO. Upgrading a non-rev before a Diamond is unforgivable!

Rene, I recently flew in the A350 DTW/NRT upgraded with a GUC to Delta One. It was nice, enjoyed the food, service and large video screen. On the return NRT/DTW, wasn’t able to upgrade to Delta One but instead “upgraded” to Premium Select, a middle seat, from a Main Cabin aisle seat which I will never do again. SteveG is correct, not enough leg room. The extra perks didn’t make up for the flexibility to get up and walk around. I would never pay for Premium Select.

Interesting I called the Diamond line about 20 hours before check in on my outbound to NRT and was able to upgrade to Delta One, not so lucky on the return to DTW.
