I have consumed many a Delta first class meal over the many years I have been flying Delta. Some have been fantastic and memorable while others less so and disappointing at best. But overall Delta does a fine job at providing meals at 500 miles per hour at 32000 feet up in the air.
In January on a flight from Seattle to SNA I had what may be the best ever meal I have had in all my years of flying. I know the photo above simply does not do the flavors justice (at least the faux wood trays are now gone) but let me try to describe what was presented.
- 2 types of sausage – both with great flavor
- Warm German potato salad also with nice spices
- A healthy portion of sauerkraut
- A sizable portion of spicy mustard
- A roll presented with the meal
- 2x chocolate cookie for dessert.
Let me start with the sausages. First there were two types. What an impressive detail. The quantity was also perfect and the flavor and texture was spot on. What a great choice to precook and then have rewarmed in an airline oven. Well done on this choice.
Next the warm potato salad. Delta could have gone with a cold choice here and it would have worked but this was that much better and a much better choice than just say some kind of baked type spud. This pleasantly seasoned presentation worked with the dish to make it true to the German concept.
I don’t know about you but I love sauerkraut and the more the better. Add in with that a nice spicy mustard and you have just about the perfect bite and I finished everything provided. Just num!
I also was impressed that Delta provided the roll at the same time as the meal. This has been a gripe for me and many others for years that when Delta reps come with warm rolls well after the meal is presented it becomes pointless. Someone in catering listened to the feedback it seems. Well done, Delta.
Lastly, for you who are chocolate fans, the Dancing Deer 2x chocolate cookie had to be my favorite choice to end a Delta meal (other than maybe the snicker doodle choice as a backup favorite).
Bottom line is this was a meal I desperately hope I get to have again. I will be planning my seating according to FEBO to improve my odds to get this choice again since Delta, now years later, still has not implemented the order in advance choice to ensure I get a chance to try this delicious dish again! – René

I really feel bad for your seatmate after you ate that meal. Just saying!!!!!
Rene: why all my comments do not post automatically and needs moderation? Am I that bad as a contributor to this blog?
@Santastico – ALL comments are moderated by me. ALL.
Hope they passed out GasX
Lol Delta has served this meal out of SEA for 2 years now. Originally part of the Delta Shuttle meal featuring Seattle-made sausage & other elements. Ivars Clam Chowder used to be included but was cut in last year. Same for a small cake from a Pike Place Bakery – now a pre-packaged cookie.
Hey Rene
Just got my 2018 Diamond wallet card and PLASTIC BAG TAGS in the mail. Did you notice I said PLASTIC. Considering how the metal ones get abused how long do you think the plastic will last.

While I love some German food, this sounds like what gets served at an Assisted Living facility in the Upper Midwest, not in First Class on Delta. :p
Looks nice, sounds great.
I would have orderd it here in a local restaurant.
Mmmm! That sounds like a great meal! Hope I can have it sometime! 🙂
