Are Delta’s “reinvented & refreshed” coach enhancements anything to get excited about?

a blue package and a blue package on a table

I have to say it has been a really long time since I took a long international flight in coach on any airline let alone Delta (thank you so much points)! But on my recent final Delta 747 flight I was stuck back in C+ (but thankfully with an extra empty seat next to me). I am well accustomed to all the bits that come with Delta one including heavy blankets, big pillows and a nice menu for what wonderful bits are soon on the way. But all this in coach too?

a close-up of a book

I have to say the mini-menu was nice with a timeline of the service schedule. The eye shade that the last time I tested one years ago smelled so bad of cheap chemicals I could not stand it for more than a few seconds was now much better. Heck, even really cheap slippers were included – not bad Delta.

a group of items on a table

Take that in combination with the fact that thicker blankets and bigger pillows are on the way on international coach flights and this could be a real wow factor right? Well maybe not so fast.

a group of food in a tray

I credit Delta for a bunch. They are even going to try to improve the above service wear but the food was nothing exciting and I doubt that will change in coach. Plus, you only have so much room in a tiny coach seat and room on a tiny tray to begin with.

Delta does provide free drinks, great IFE, fast Gogo wifi and so many things we simply take for granted compared to other airlines. These things make the time fly by, if you will. I like the idea of improving the food service but not sure if these tiny changes are enough to make the Delta coach experience that much more than others.

You tell me. Are you “wowed” by the Delta international coach experience vs. other airlines? Are all these changes enough to make you consider Delta over others? – René

I don’t really think Delta one food is all that good I can’t imagine coach food will be good

Rene, could you please explain why Skyclub agents constantly tell me to make my Choice Benefits selection now in order to be able to enter a Skyclub.
I am a DM and traveling solely International in coach – with often a domestic connection (or two).
Agents insist that access to the Skyclub has changed and is now to be selected from the Choice Benefits .

    Thanks in advance !

@justine – That is correct as fare as club membership but you have no need if always INT flights and you are DM ie Skyteam elite+ and I would point that out to them next time. 😉

Ahhh, thanks so much for the clarification and your quick response.
That is quite a relief – hope it will work since I am in the Skyclub now, but had to endure the “lecture” from two agents upon check-in.

As one who experienced the 747 flight with you, i was impressed with the mini amenity kit, especially the slippers. Slippers are the one amenity I always use and appreciate regardless of the class of service. If flying coach, I always bring a pair of hotel slippers in my backpack anyway. And the eyeshade has all sorts of potential uses.

I fly a fair amount in coach (although more in B and F) on long international flights on various airlines. Some, like Korean Air on some flights, provide the same type of ameniies in coach. Most don’t.

The food was comparable to what other airlines serve TPAC. Many use silverware in coach.

The seat is the most important item all other things relatively equal. C+ helps but is still an endurance test on full flights like DTW-NRT when GUCs don’t clear. That’s another subject.

On airlines that don’t have a C+ product, I usually select a seat at the rear of the plane as long as connections are not an issue. Odds have been better than 50-50 I’ll have an empty seat or two next to me there.

It is a shame that delta’s new long haul flagship, the A350, has only standard seating in coach. That’s a plane to avoid.
