I made one mistake in planning the trip down to see the great eclipse of 2017 in Charleston SC that is, I did not stay long enough to enjoy all the sights of this great American city that I had never had the chance to visit. Sure the Lewis BBQ was amazing the night we arrived but the history demands much more time than we had.
The one thing I did plan for that I did not want to miss was a tour of Charleston harbor. Rather than select a “cattle boat” that packs folks in, we went with a smaller, but well reviewed operator, Adventure Harbor Tours and we were most pleased with the choice.
We arrived early and the boat was still out on the first tour. No problem, there happens to be a California Dreaming restaurant right next door to where the boat picks you up and that allows time for lunch or even a refreshing mimosa to start the day! 🙂
The boat is a large basic pontoon boat with spacious bench seating. The pro’s are the open feel, the great crews who shared tons of history with humor. The con’s are they provide you with nothing, not even water (but they do have a lavatory on-board). However, you are allowed to bring a cooler and whatever you want to enjoy during the cruise.
On the way out of the harbor you get a nice view of the historic homes along the water. I would have liked to have had the time to stroll along the boardwalk and will plan for that next visit to Charleston.
The first location we passed by was Fort Sumter along with bits of history about the civil war. Next time I want to actually set foot on land and see it close up. It was a treat to catch dolphins playing all around us with the fort in the background.
We were also told about how hard the shrimp business was becoming and that we should ask for local shrimp when we went to dine in the area. The one spot we did go for lunch did not offer them. 🙁
Next up on the tour was a great view of the Arthur Ravenel bridge. It was neat to see from the water and exhilarating to drive across as well. A functional and stunning work work of art.
Lastly we got a great close up view of the USS Yorktown. As much of an AVgeek as I am I can not dream of landing an airplane on that small a runway while the deck was heaving up / down / left / right!
Bottom line this was a great tour and I would highly recommend both the Adventure Harbor Tours folks as well as the tour of the harbor itself. – René
