I can not begin to tell you how happy I am that my wife and I A) went to see the total eclipse this year with Air, hotel & car all free on points and B) that we went to Charleston to do it.
For dinner the first night we wanted to see if there was a BBQ place that was anywhere near as good as what we have come to expect from Texas BBQ. I was told we have to go to Lewis BBQ – so we did!
I am firmly in the camp that when you go to a “good” BBQ spot the sides should not be slaw or anything like that but another protein
After all, the reason you are here is not for things that grow in the ground, but to eat something that ate things that grew in the ground! I love the way Lewis embraces this in the art to guide you to:
Where you order the nummyness by the pound. A decent menu but not quite as extensive as I would have liked to see.
The brisket and the ribs did look amazing. If you have never experienced ordering BBQ this way you are missing out as it just adds to what is about to come.
We went for ribs, brisket and some turkey to round out the tasting and all three were just about perfect with rich smoke flavor and great BBQ taste. They even included as free sides some onions, pickled onions and pickles. I really like the pickled onions as a bit of a pallet cleanser between proteins. Nice touch Lewis!
You have a choice of inside seating with air conditioning or a very pleasant outside area under a massive oak tree with some of the neatest outdoor lighting I have ever seen. Really special.
I know the coasts are normally all about seafood but if you find yourself in Charleston I recommend you try the meats at Lewis for at least one night out! – René
