This has been a very busy and exciting weekend. As much as I know about all things Delta I am still always learning. From SkyMiles to Medallion perks I am constantly amazed about the levels upon levels of rules the airline has and just what is and what is not possible if you ask. Also, I am working on a rather long post for tomorrow as I am now booked for the inaugural Delta A350 flight from Detroit to Japan at the end of October soon after my last 747 flight. Without giving away the entire post let me share that I am flying the new Premium Economy seat that Delta, being Delta, is not calling a PE seat but Premium Select seat because what they call brand differentiation we all simply call brand confusion. Ah well, when you see me use PS I am talking about the new PE seat! 🙂
On to today’s post. I am also trying to find time to review the very nice all inclusive hotel my wife and I stayed at last month on Ultimate Rewards points. As part of that adventure I had my first test of the Medallion +1 upgrades (yes, almost a year after it was announced). I have been “preaching” that the +1 upgrade perk is most likely to impact weekend travel as well as vacation targeted / heavy routes. Well just take a look at a screen shot of the upgrade list from St. Thomas back to Atlanta from the middle of May. Yep, 5 +1 upgrades requested and 10 of the top 14 on the list were all elite’s and their +1. Interesting.
Next up a Groupon issue that I don’t think I ever blogged about but apologies if I have already covered it but since the redemption time is limited I wanted to get this out to you. If you have ever used Groupon you should check to see if you were part of the settlement against them for something they did that was less than above board. I have only used Groupon a few times and got almost $13 as an account credit but as you can see I have to spend that credit before years end. I have now spent mine, first starting at TopCashBack to earn even more (#ProTip), and will be enjoying a nice $30 dinner credit in South Bend for about $3 all-in as the coupon I purchased was 50% off face value. Maybe there are similar deals in your home town as well.
Lastly, I have purchased something very interesting that is a hand held steady cam unit called DEBO Steadyvid as well as an adapter to mount my cell phone on top of this unit. The end goal is to add more video to reviews to the blog. It should not be a problem in lounges but I am not sure how much I can get done on jets in regard to seat reviews. I am going to try where I can do it without causing any disruption (thinking maybe after landing). In my early testing it does help me create much more stable video than just hand held attempts. Call this one developing with a real test next month when I fly out to LAX to see for myself just how good the new operations are working after the terminal switch for Delta.
Have a great weekend everyone and don’t forget to enter my SWAG Saturday drawing that ends later tonight. – René

I was Very pleasantly surprised this week when I got an email from Delta. My cousin and I are flying IAH-SLC-SAN Tuesday AM–Using one of my Delta AMX Companion tickets–and are already upgraded to 1st class. 1st time it has happened when I am a +1–I’m Platinum and am lucky to get upgraded 50% of the time. Am super excited because she has never flown 1st class. Of course-there will be NO meal now that Delta no longer serves for ‘short trips’ but it will be fun!!
Thanks for your post
PAW
Actually, 10 of the top 12 were all +1!
