I have had endless e-mails for updates after my post from 1 year and 1 month ago stating that Delta will “soon” allow pre-ordering of 1st class meals. Clearly Delta jumped the gun with this news but is now, at long last, at least in the testing phase of the new program. I was told:
“At Delta, we are continuously making thoughtful investments to elevate the on-board experience based on our customers’ feedback. Our customers have told us that they value having more control over their experience inflight, specifically around selecting their meal options in advance to ensure they receive their first choice. As a result, we are conducting a pre-selection test April 24 through May 24.
During the month-long test period, a subset of customers traveling on select international flights in the Delta One cabin will be asked to participate in the test via an email and/or text message. Throughout the test, customer satisfaction scores and flight attendant feedback as well as operational aspects will be closely monitored. We will share our plans beyond the test period after we review all the results and our go-forward plan has been finalized.” – Delta representative Catherine Sirna
I have been told by other sources that these “select international flights” will be out of Atlanta to a few hubs in Europe.
Another reader, Mark also sent me an update the other day showing that the GST (Guest Services Tool) or better known as the Skypro windows based hand held units the FAs use now is allowing 1st class ordering and inventory control rather than doing it by hand on paper. This will save some time and I see this also as the next logical step toward pre-order integration.
I know a number of other airlines already offer pre-ordering of meals in 1st class and look forward to this being implemented beyond the test run. That is, I hope they expand beyond the limited test and that those who try it give them positive feedback! – René

With all of the cross hiring of management that happens in the airline industry surely DL knows exactly how other airlines make ordering meals in advance work for the customer and the airline. If AA can do it, what’s the big mystery? We will see how long it takes to evaluate the test and implement a program.
Not that it really matters but might this service be available on codeshares from ATL to Europe(i.e. Virgin to LHR)?
Rene- why do you still carry water for this greedy airline? If the only folks who get first class anymore are people who can pay full fare (Diamond upgrades are dying), why do they need your help? Your info is quite good, but if I were able to purchase full fare first class, I would have most or all of the freebies you like to tell the “regular” folks.
We need a “Festivus for the rest of us”…
Do you know if Frankfurt is one of the European cities from Atlanta? I have a trip scheduled there for May 24th but I have not received a notification yet. Thanks for the update.
@Chris – Don’t think so. My understanding is AMS & CDG.
per twitter LHR is the other city.
