EXIT, to the Sky Club?

It is rather easy to miss the entrance to this Delta Sky Club because it is immediately to the left as you exit security screening.

If you are down there, you missed the club!

If you are walking below you have missed the elevators up one floor or the stairs that seem to EXIT you out of the airport.

You can get in with a number of AMEX cards or, if you are a Skyteam elite plus status and are on a coach or anyone on a business class international departing (or connecting) ticket, you can also get in free.

The club is open Sunday through Friday from 5:AM to 8:PM and closes an hour earlier on Saturday.

review-delta-air-lines-sky-club-dca-ronald-reagan-washington-national-airport-renespoints-travel-blog-4

The reps were super friendly and there is only one desk to assist with both check-in and flight issues.

review-delta-air-lines-sky-club-dca-ronald-reagan-washington-national-airport-renespoints-travel-blog-5

Across from check-in you have a number of papers to enjoy in the club or on your way out.

Despite the smallish footprint of the club there is a “luxury bar” that is, unlike some clubs, there is a bartender to assist you for drinks other than OJ in the morning or iced tea in the afternoons.

review-delta-air-lines-sky-club-dca-ronald-reagan-washington-national-airport-renespoints-travel-blog-7

Across from the bar is the Starbucks coffee options. I am not a coffee drinker but this setup is not as grand as some other clubs.

Just left of the bar is the one food service area. Above are stock continental Delta Sky Club breakfast choices.

Later in the day you can expect light snacks as your choices. There are no real food choices as some of the upgraded Sky Clubs offer say in Atlanta or Seattle.

Soup, salad, chicken salad and other choices.

Just to the right of the main club area is a small seating space that does offer some nice runway views.

review-delta-air-lines-sky-club-dca-ronald-reagan-washington-national-airport-renespoints-travel-blog-14

The club is really just this one main large room with additional seating around this space. Do take notice of the far wall.

review-delta-air-lines-sky-club-dca-ronald-reagan-washington-national-airport-renespoints-travel-blog-18

Like in other clubs there is an internet accessible printer and paper shredder (good for DC right). However it is a bit strange to me having it out in the main central area.

review-delta-air-lines-sky-club-dca-ronald-reagan-washington-national-airport-renespoints-travel-blog-15

Along the right side is where you want to sit if you are enjoying a complimentary beverage and want to get the best airport views.

review-delta-air-lines-sky-club-dca-ronald-reagan-washington-national-airport-renespoints-travel-blog-19

Or if you are having a snack there are some tables along the back wall with equally nice sights to take in.

Along the back left wall there is a long subdivided laptop work space with views of the concourse below. The chairs are less than comfortable and I found many standing while working. This is not a great work setup and during crowded times I can see this being less than ideal.

One of the best things going for this somewhat dated Sky Club are the views that are stunning of DC. This alone would be a reason to visit this club.

I also spoke to the manager of the club and was told they are working on getting funds for a remodel and it would be nice to see a refresh. I was also told the club can at peak times get very crowded.

Have you had a chance to visit the DCA Sky Club? Did you enjoy your visit? – René

    Rene,

I used to get there a lot. It can be crazy crowded which can lead to some waits for the restroom, but the staff is always great. It would be nice to see a refit, but I am not sure if they can add space.

I have used it several times this year and it can be very busy and crowded and finding a space to sit can be trying. Your photos show the club at its best and emptiest. The staff have always tried to make up for the space issues with friendly service at the bar and food service. However, on my last visit as I got off the plane my cell phone had a an emergency message and text and when I got to the lounge the staff at the front desk were absolutely remarkable in their willingness to help make changes to my flights later that day. They were very compassionate as they were trying to find the best alternatives for me while I was on the phone with the hospital, family and friends. They were very professional yet so compassionate and helpful. I sent an extended e-mail to Delta corporate detailing by name their actions and professionalism and commended them for added a touch of calm to a very stressful day.

A major renovation of this club is coming soon. Renderings are already on display in the club, and while the overall square footage isn’t really changing, removal of walls, rearranging the space, and moving the agents’ desks out into the foyer will all result in an increase of usable seating space in the club, more power outlets, an expanded buffet area, a larger bar, and a modernization of the decor.

@Steven – Nice. It is time. This club could use a refresh. My guess is no showers?

No showers – and really, no reason for them either. The traffic is pretty much 100% origin/destination, there are no redeye flights into DCA on DL (or any other airline to my knowledge), and while there are some early morning departures, if you have time to shower in the club before a 6:00 AM flight, you had time to shower at home. There would be almost zero demand for them if they did exist, so why bother, when installing them means sacrificing valuable space for an amenity that would be mostly ignored?

DCA is my home airport – and the SkyClub there is nice. Yeah, it’s mostly the older decor (some interim renovation work was done last year), and the modernization will be nice, but overall it’s a very well run club. The renovation will only make it better. I visit it 3-4 times a month, usually at peak business travel hours, but I’ve never not been able to find an open seat.
