When you tell me I can earn 2x SPG points per dollar you have my attention. Not just SPG points considering also I can also get 2x on my AMEX Platinum Business card that when I spend them on air will give my 50% points back you really have my complete attention. But there are some issues that are frustrating with this offer.
First off I would love to scale this up big time and max it out per card, but that is not a simple task. I would have to find small business locations that offers something like a VDGC that I could buy and liquidate and repeat during the promo period. I am seeing, at first glance locally, just about nothing that could help accomplish this. I do have one local drug store and one small grocery store that may just be able to provide what I need and I will be checking what can be done as well as searching for other locations that may also work. If I were you I would network in your local area with other points fans to see if something can be found near where you are.
- Car wash & Oil Change
- The South Bend Theater
- A number of restaurants
- My favorite dry cleaner
- …and a few more spots
All of this sounds nice but, sigh, it will only get me so far. Even stretching it we are talking maybe $1000-$2000 maximum in spend on gift cards at all of these locations that I could use up in a year or less. 1-2K extra SPG points or 1-2K extra Membership Rewards points (the latter that will become net 1.5-3k after rebate) is nice but nothing to go ga-ga over.
The bottom line is unless I can find a way to scale this up to the max bonus allowed I will take part but not enthusiastically so. Sure, it is better than nothing like last year but not at all as great as the years before when the rewards were much more instant for much less spending.
By all means do register all your cards HERE and enjoy the extra few bonus points you get and if you find a “sweet spot” in your local area enjoy this years SBS promo even more! – René
